USA Cricket Team Gains ODI Status For the First Time in History

In a first, the United States of America’s cricket team has made history by becoming an ICC-accredited ODI side, joining a prestigious list of countries to play the game at the highest level. The status was ensured at the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 as USA cricket team ended at the second place in the points table after beating Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Out of the 4 matches played by each team until now, Oman tops the table with 4 wins while the USA is at the second place with 3 wins.

Both Oman and the USA have secured the prestigious ODI status following their brilliant run in the World Cricket League Division 2. It is worth mentioning that its a 6-team tournament including Namibia, Hong Kong, Canada, and Papua New Guinea.

A Match to Remember

Batting first, USA posted a solid total of 280/8 in their 50 overs as opener Xavier Marshall hammered century. He was well supported by Steven Taylor who amassed 88 runs after being put in to bat by Hong Kong.

Chasing 281 in Windhoek, Hong Kong never looked like winning the game as USA bowlers gave decent performances to restrict them. Hong Kong were 84 short of the target to give USA the ODI status for the first time in their cricketing history.

The cricket lovers in America will remember Wednesday’s clash against Hong Kong for a long time as the win earned their team the status of an ODI team. They can now play ODI matches against any cricketing nation if the other team agrees.

Emotions Running High

The tournament is not over yet and USA coach, Pubudu Dassanayake is looking to finish things on a high after having accomplished a milestone.

“As a team, we have worked really hard for the last two and a half years and we have targeted this tournament. The boys are feeling great, it is a big achievement as the USA have never been to this level before and we are very happy to be in (ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup) League 2. Moving forward playing competitive ODI cricket for the next 2 and half years is another level, bringing the team to this will require more hard work. We are going to press hard in the next game, we want to win the tournament and be the best team leaving Namibia.”

Cricket has been constantly on the rise in America and the International Cricket Council has been putting in a lot of effort to spread the game to all parts of the world including USA. The growing number of cricket tournaments for the associate nations has increased the interest levels among youngsters of all nations where cricket has been previously neglected.
