SA vs SL 1st ODI: Tahir, du Plessis take South Africa 1-up in ODI series

SA vs SL 1st ODI

 

SA vs SL 1st ODI held at Johannesburg on March 3rd was comfortably won by South Africa after restricting the visitors to a low total since winning the toss and choosing to bowl first.

Sri Lanka Batting First

Proteas captain won the toss and elected to field first in SA vs SL 1st ODI. Niroshan Dickwella and Upul Tharanga opened the batting for the Lankans but failed to provide a solid start to their team. Both openers went back to pavilion when the score was just 23. Kusal Perera and Oshada Fernando then added 76 runs to the team total for the 3rd wicket, and the partnership was finally broken in the 17th over when Kusal Perera gave a catch to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock off Imran Tahir’s bowling. Two overs later, Oshada Fernando also lost his wicket when he was playing on 49 runs, and Sri Lankans were soon four down for 101 runs.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis then tried to rebuilt the Lankans innings and put on a stand of 94 runs for the 5th wicket. Dhananjaya de Silva was finally stumped in the 37th. Kusal Mendis also departed after two overs off Imran Tahir’s bowling. He scored 60 runs with the help of 5 boundaries and one six.

In the end, the rest of the batsmen couldn’t provide the much-needed finish. Sri Lanka was all out on 231 runs in 47 overs. For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi and Imran Tahir picked up 3 wickets each.

 

South Africa In Chase

South Africa didn’t have an ideal start and lost Reeza Hendricks in the 2nd over. But Faf du Plessis then came to join de Kock and built a solid partnership of 136 runs. They both ensured that the Africans didn’t go under more trouble during the chase. The partnership was finally broken in the 24th over when Dananjaya trapped de Kock on LBW. He scored 81 runs, and his innings included 11 boundaries.

Rassie van der Dussen then came to join skipper Faf du Plessis and guided South Africa to a comfortable eight wickets win over Sri Lanka in SA vs SL 1st ODI. They both added unbeaten 82, and in the process, Faf du Plessis scored his 11th ODI ton. Faf du Plessis and van der Dussen remained not out on 112 and 32 runs respectively.
