Table of Contents
PSL was nearing the completion of the group stage fixtures as Peshawar squared off against Lahore. Lahore was absolutely battered in the reverse fixture, having been bowled out for a score of 77 and they would have been hoping for a much-improved performance in this outing. Peshawar, on the other hand, was coming on the back of poor performance, both with the ball and in the field after losing to Quetta in the last match. With both the teams looking to turn their fortunes around, Peshawar won the toss and opted to bowl first.
1st Innings: A much-improved outing in the field
Peshawar’s bowling attack looked much improved as compared to the previous match. Mills was a very welcomed addition to the squad as Lahore could never really get going.
Fakhar started off the innings with a four but Tymal Mills got off to a fantastic start as he got Devcich (5) in his very first over, caught at mid-on after miscuing one. Fakher’s (11) start didn’t materialize as he threw his wicket away to Gul, edging one to Akmal.
Haris Sohail looked very good as he played a few classy shots across the park but he never really got any support from the other end. Ten Doeschate (2), replacing the injured AB, couldn’t make a mark as he tried to heap one out of the park, only to find the fielder at long-off. Sohail Akhtar (11) soon followed his lead, giving a simple catch to Akmal and Sameen Gul his 2nd of the night.
Haris Sohail and Umair put on a 32 run stand and looked to control the damage done by Zalmis before Haris Sohail (43) was dismissed by Mills with a fantastic catch at the 3rd man by Khalid Usman.
Umair Masood soon perished for 22 after failing to pick Mills’ slower ball and got cleaned up. David Wiese made a cameo of 26 from 16 but it wasn’t enough as Lahore only managed to finish with 124/7 on the board in their 20. Mills was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 29 in his 4.
2nd Innings: The Shaheen Show
Lahore, in a do or die sort of situation, responded in some style. Getting off to a near perfect start, Shaheen got the in-form Imam (4) in the very first over when he nipped one in and through the gates, shattering the stumps. Kamran Akmal (3) followed a similar fate as he too was beaten all ends up by an in-dipper from Rahat Ali.
Shaheen was on a roll as he took Amin (0) as his next scalp. There was no stopping the 18-year-old who got Dawson for naught on the very next ball courtesy a big inside edge. Peshawar got into a batting collapse as Pollard followed soon after. Looking to flick one onto the leg side, Pollard played all ends up as the ball clipped his leg stump, Wiese getting his first of the night.
Misbah and Sammy to the rescue!
With 20-5 in just 6.2 overs, Peshawar welcomed back Misbah and the Skipper Sammy at the crease. Misbah, doing what he does best, just anchored the innings and he was very well supported at the other end by Sammy. Misbah made sure no more wickets fell as he kept the scoreboard ticking. Sammy, on the other hand, played a run a ball inning and kept on with the run rate.
With both the players playing one heck of an innings, Peshawar came within touching distance as the pair brought up a 100 run stand. With 6 runs needed of the over, Sammy got cleaned up by Doeschate for 46 from 36 but Misbah remained unbeaten on 59 as he steered Peshawar over the line, Peshawar winning the match with 2 balls and 4 wickets remaining.
With this victory, Peshawar has qualified for the next round. Misbah and Sammy made sure Peshawar’s early collapse went in vain as they chased down a very low total. Lahore, on the other hand, will be extremely proud at how they fought hard with a very low total on the board but they have a very tough task now of qualifying.
