PSL 2019 Eliminator 1: Karachi Kings vs Islamabad United Post-Match

In the first Eliminator of this year’s PSL – Islamabad United vs Karachi Kings, a great bowling effort and some fine hitting from the batsmen proved pivotal as Islamabad knocked out the local boys.

Match Report

It was a full house as Karachi faced off against Islamabad in the first Eliminator of this year’s PSL.

Karachi fans were roaring and Karachi would have hoped to put up a good show as they won the toss and chose to bat first.

1st Innings: Munro’s lightning quick cameo

Karachi would have wanted a good, quick start and Munro provided them with just that. He was partnered by Babar Azam and the pair smashed boundaries for fun, all over the park. With 10 boundaries from just the first 20 balls, Karachi raced to the 50 run mark.

However, Musa announced his arrival as he broke the partnership, getting the important wicket of Munro. Extra Pace and bounce did him as he departed for 32 from just 11, 7 boundaries. Livingstone arrived at the crease and he continued to take the beating to Islamabad as they brought up a 50 run stand. Livingstone was dropped on 4 by the skipper and he made the most of it as he punished the United bowlers.

Shadab broke the partnership when he tossed one up and induced an edge from Livingstone (30).

Islamabad bounce back

Karachi, up until this point, were pretty much into the game, courtesy of a great start from the top order. It was, however, a different ball game as Islamabad brought themselves back into the game by picking up wickets. Babar Azam (42) fell in the very next over as Karachi started to crumble under pressure. Colin Ingram scored 23 off 16 but he too faltered quickly to Musa, his 2nd of the night. He got another one in the very same over when he took Iftikhar’s wicket cheaply for 1.

After this, the Karachi tail failed to do any sort of significant damage as wickets continued to tumble. Karachi lost the last 8 wickets for just 59 runs as Islamabad restricted them to a score 161/9 in their 20 overs. Faheem took 2 late wickets but the pick of the bowlers was Musa with 3 wickets.

2nd Innings: Islamabad in firm control

Islamabad had to start off the innings well and they got it, despite losing Ronchi early for 5. Delport took the bowlers to the cleaners early on and he was very well supported at the other end by Alex Hales. The pair put up a 44 run stand as Islamabad kept their pace with the required run-rate.

Umer changes things for the Kings

Islamabad was in firm control of the match when Umer Khan was brought into the attack. He made an instant impact as he got the all-important wicket of Delport (38). He capped off a successful over after getting his 2nd when he got Chadwick for naught.

Alex Hales then steadied the ship as he put up a 51 run with Hussain Talat, who played a blinder of an innings. He scored 32 from just 19, including 3 sixes, as Islamabad showed great nerves.

Karachi brought themselves back into the game once again when they got two wickets in quick succession, Yamen breaking the partnership after getting Hales out for 41. Talat also fell soon after for 32, Shinwari getting his man.

Asif Ali wins is for Islamabad

However, Islamabad held their nerves as Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf took the crease. The pair put up a very important 31 run stand at the death as Asif Ali (24*) hit a couple of big sixes and steered Islamabad over the line with 3 balls and 4 wickets to spare at the end. Umer Khan was brilliant with the ball, figures of 2 for 16 in his 4, but it all went in vain as Islamabad took the match.
