PSL 2019 Draft Picks: AB de Villiers Will Play for Qalandars

The much-awaited PSL 2019 draft happened yesterday in Islamabad. The star-studded event featured many national and international celebrities and star players. The complete squad details of all 6 six teams are as follow.

Islamabad United Squad

The defending champions came up with quite a strong combination of local and international players. Foreign players include the destructive opening batsman Luke Ronchi who was the top scorer of PSL 2018 as well.

Apart from Ronchi, Islamabad has chosen the stylish English middle order batsman Ian Bell and South African star Wayne Parnell. Off-spinner Samit Patel will again play for the United after having a successful PSL season earlier this year.

Peshawar Zalmi Squad

Peshawar Zalmi – the runner-ups of PSL in the last edition retained Wahab Riaz and Hassan Ali in their team for PSL 2019. Liam Dawson and David Malan will also be representing the Zalmi again this season. Darren Sammy will most probably leading the team for third time.

A surprising addition to Zalmi is of the former Test captain of Pakistan national team Misbah Ul Haq. It was under Misbah’s captaincy that Islamabad United was crowned 2 times the champions of PSL. Misbah was offered the role of mentor of the team by United for PSL 4 but he refused and decided to participate as a player in the upcoming edition.

Zalmi picked the West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard who represented Karachi Kings in last season for their 3rd Platinium slot in the PSL 2019 draft yesterday. Quetta Gladiators Squad

Quetta Gladiators already got Sunil Narine and Umar Akmal in a deal with Lahore Qalandars earlier this month. In their Platinum pick, Gladiators went for the Caribbean star Dwayne Bravo. Bravo is considered as a T20 specialist and was picked by Peshawar Zalmi in last season. However, due to an injury, Bravo missed the last edition of PSL.

The Gladiators will surely miss the veteran batsman Kevin Peterson who will no longer play for them this season. But the addition of Sohail Tanveer and Sunil Narine might compensate for Kevin’s absence. Quetta has also retained the South African batsman Rilee Roussow who played impressively with the bat in PSL 3.

Sarfaraz Ahmed again will be leading his team. The all-rounders like Anwar Ali and Muhammad Nawaz can be Quetta’s key players. Both players have the abilities to turn the tables in difficult situations. Muhammad Asghar of Peshawar Zalmi has also been selected by Gladiators for PSL 2019.

Lahore Qalandars Squad

Lahore can be considered as the team with best batting lineup of PSL 4 as their squad seems very strong (at least on paper). With the addition of two of the most dangerous batsmen i.e. AB De Villiers and Corey Anderson, Qalandars will surely be aiming the league’s title.

AB De Villiers was already rumored to join Lahore which now has become a reality. In another Platinum pick, Qalandars grabbed the experienced Muhammad Hafeez who played his last three seasons for Peshawar Zalmi. He, along with Fakhar Zaman, De Villiers and Anderson can destroy any bowling attack.

In the bowling area, Lahore got Yasir Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Aizaz Cheema and Rahat Ali on their side. An interesting addition to the team is the emerging Nepali spinner – Sandeep Lamichhane. He has been in the highlights for the last few months and has also played in other leagues as well.

Karachi Kings Squad

Karachi Kings retained Muhammad Amir and Babar Azam in their Platinum category. They picked Colin Munro as their third Platinum player. Munro missed the 2018 edition of PSL and was replaced with the West Indian opener, Lendl Simmons.

Karachi has failed to impress their fans so far in the last three additions. However, this time their squad looks stronger. They have the likes of Imad Wasim, Colin Ingram, and Ravi Bopara. No doubt all these players can create some serious trouble for the opposition teams.

Usman Shinwari from Diamond category is in a good form nowadays whereas Sohail Khan too will be one of the Key bowlers for Kings. The aggressive batsmen like Colin Ingram, Awais Zia, and Iftikhar Ahmed can hit the ball really hard.

Here we have the complete Karachi Kings squad:

The Sixth Team Squad

The Sixth Team (formerly Multan Sultans) have some of the best T20 players onboard. The very experienced Shoaib Malik will most likely be captaining his side. The Australian star Steven Smith will also be entertaining the fans with his beautiful cricketing shots. He was picked by the Sixth Team in the Platinum pick.

Shahid Afridi who left Karachi just after one season is now a part of the Sixth Team. He might not be consistent but when it’s his day, he is unstoppable. Joe Denly and Daniel Christian will be the main power hitters for their team. The Caribbean wicket-keeper batsman Nicolas Pooran will also be in action for the SIxth Team.

Talking about the team’s bowling lineup, we can consider it one of the best among other teams. The left arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan performed well in the last edition. He will be assisted by Junaid Khan and Ali Shafiq from the other end. Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik will cover the spinning area along with the young talent Umar Shafiq.

  • Shoaib Malik (Platinum)
  • Steven Smith (Platinum)
  • Shahid Afridi (Platinum)
  • Mohammad Irfan (Diamond)
  • Junaid Khan (Diamond)

Players Who Went Unsold in PSL 2019 Draft

A draft where every team was looking to have the best combination of players, surprisingly many players remained unsold. The Afghan star spinner Rashid Khan was one of them. Other players include Lasith Malinga, Samuel Badree, Tymal Mills, Luke Wright, Marlon Samuels, Steven Finn, James Franklin, Brendon McCullum, Chris Lynn, Imran Tahir and many more.

Concluding Remarks

With the addition of new star players, the league will be more exciting than ever. All the six teams look strong and we are expecting some really competitive cricket among them. The event is scheduled in February of 2019 and will last for a month. We will be updating you with the schedule and more news. Let us know about your thoughts on the draft in the comments section.
