Prithvi Shaw – The next Tendulkar in making?


Cricket has seen many stars that came out surprising everyone and then ruled the cricketing world for years. Looks like Prithvi Shaw is going to be one of those names. Prithvi is the talk of the town nowadays after scoring a Test century on his debut against West Indies.

He has become the youngest Indian to score a ton on his debut Test match. Who is Prithvi Shaw, what is his background and how did he get this fame? Let’s find out.

Family Background

Prithvi Shaw was born on November 9th, 1999 in Virar, India. His mother died when he was only 4 years of age. His father – Pankaj Shaw had a garments business which he gave up just to focus on Shaw’s cricketing career. And it turns out that he made the right call.

Prithvi Started playing cricket at a very young age. He was only 3 when his father enrolled him in a cricket academy in the town. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. Since then, he has continued to make the headlines for all the right reasons.

Let’s take a detailed look at his career phases:

Early period

At the age of just 11 years, Shaw got his first contract from AAP Entertainment Limited and shifted to Mumbai along with his father to continue his cricketing career. There he was admitted in the Rizvi Springfield High School and soon became the captain of school’s cricket team. Under Prithvi’s captaincy, Rizvi Springfield had won 2 Harris Shield titles.

In November 2013, Shaw broke the record of highest runs scored by a player ever in any organized cricket match. He scored 546 runs from just 330 balls in that match against St Francis d’Assisi. That’s when he grabbed the attention of the media and won praise from many big names. But that was just the start.

First Class Cricket

Shaw debuted in first-class cricket in 2017 where he scored a century in a semi-final of Ranji Trophy. He played for Mumbai and was named the man of the match.

He also holds the joint record of scoring centuries on debut in both Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy along with Sachin Tendulkar.

The Indian selection board was so impressed with Shaw’s performance in domestic cricket that he was named the captain of India’s under-19 team for the World Cup in 2018.

It was then Shaw’s brilliant captaincy that led Indian Team to win the under-19 World Cup beating Australia in the final. He is still the captain of U-19.

IPL 2018

The IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils bought Prithvi Shaw for INR 1.2 crores in the 2018 auction. He played his first match against Kings XI Punjab where he became the youngest player in Indian Premier League history to open for any team at the age of 18.

He wasn’t able to perform what fans were expecting from him in the IPL. However, in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Shaw scored a half-century which led his team to win the match by 55 runs. With that fifty, he became the youngest player in the IPL to score a half-century.

International Cricket

The BCCI selection committee called up Shaw for the Test series against England in August 2018. However, in the presence of other senior players, he didn’t get the chance to make his debut in that series. It was in October 2018 when he made his Test debut in India vs West Indies series.

Prithvi impressed everyone in his very first innings against Windies, becoming the youngest Indian to score a century on his Test Debut. He scored 237 runs in 3 innings with an average of 118.5 runs. He was also named Player of the Series.

After the blistering knock against the West Indies, Shaw has again attracted the media attention. He has been featured in many national and international newspapers and magazines.

He has been praised by many Star players including Sachin Tendulkar himself. People have been comparing Prithvi Shaw to Tendulkar. The veteran batsman himself in his tweet seems quite impressed by this young blood’s performance.
