3 Top Contenders for Pakistan’s (Test) Captaincy

Pakistan’s undermining performance in test cricket has raised serious questions and many are now apprehensive whether Sarfaraz will be able to retain his position as test captain or not. The chances of Sarfaraz continuing as Test captain seem bleak.

The recent series loss against South Africa and New Zealand has made the possibility of a new test captain very strong. Neither is the coach happy with the captain’s performance nor is the management. Under such circumstances, it is evident that the test team might experience a major change.

However, the important question remains, who can replace Sarfaraz and uphold this tough responsibility?

Top 3 Contenders for Test Captaincy

Here are our top three candidates for test captaincy:

Azhar Ali

Azhar Ali is one of the most senior players of Pakistan, having played more than 70 test matches for Pakistan. He has scored over 5000 runs in test cricket and is considered to be the backbone of the team.

Unfortunately, Azhar gave a really poor performance against South Africa in the recent series. He failed to make an impact in any innings.

Azhar has led the test team in the past too but his stint as a captain wasn’t very successful. He lost against Bangladesh, England, and Australia, garnering major criticism from all ends.

Yet again he is the only senior player in the team who has the stature to replace Sarfaraz.

Babar Azam

Babar Azam is constantly impressing critics with his consistent performance whether in tests, ODI or T20. Babar has shown some true class when it comes to cricket, rarely there are occasions when he has disappointed his fans.

Even against South Africa, he was amongst the top scorers from Pakistan’s side. He made 151 runs in two test matches. It was because of his valuable 72 runs that Pakistan did not face an innings defeat and had some saving grace.

Although Babar is quite young in comparison to other players, one can expect him to be in the running for future captain becauase numbers clearly support him.

In 20 matches, he has scored over 1000 runs with his highest score being 127.

Within two years of his test debut, he has already secured a strong position within the team.

Shan Masood

Shan Masood has been the most successful batsman of the test series, having scored crucial runs in every innings. While others stumbled in front of the Proteas pacers, Shan stood firm and played some great knocks.

The left-handed batsman showed great form in both bowling and batting. He even bowled Makarram out on the very last delivery of the first day.

Shan who made his debut in 2013, has been back and forth in the team but whenever the youngster is given a chance, he performs par excellence.

Seeing Shan Masood would be a complete surprise to many but surely he won’t be a bad choice.

Who is ultimately going to wear the captain’s hat is completely unknown, yet it would be an interesting competition.

Some say Sarfaraz will be able to retain the position while others say it is almost impossible now. What will be the fate of the Pakistan Test team, only time will tell.
