PSL 2019 player categories were announced recently and there were some surprising changes in the categories. Pakistan Super League has been a massive success in Pakistan as well as on the international level.
For those of you who may not know, the franchises in PSL buy players through a draft system which is held in November every year.
There are five categories in the draft in which players are sold to the franchises. These five categories include Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver and emerging category.
Here’s the list of all players and their categories for the upcoming edition of PSL in 2019.
The criteria for promoting or demoting a player are still unknown. If we assume that the categorization of a player is based on recent performance in domestic/international matches then we have got some serious questions on the current release of player categories by Pakistan Super League.
Table of Contents
Let’s start with Shadab Khan who has been placed in the platinum category. Shadab certainly is one of the best finds of PSL. But in the last 1 year, he hasn’t performed up to the mark. His economy has been poor plus he has also failed to pick enough wickets.
Shadab himself was disappointed with his performance in the last edition of PSL. Placing him in the Diamond category would have been fairer, but that’s just our opinion.
Now coming to the Pakistani skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed. Sarfaraz’s poor performance in the recent Asia cup not only affected his own reputation but also cost great damage to the team as well. The Pakistani team struggled against the 10th ranked Afghanistan and also got knocked out of the tournament by Bangladesh.
The skipper just managed to score 68 runs in 4 innings with an average of 17. Putting him in Platinum might not be a good call, but rest is not up to his performance in the upcoming edition of PSL.
Muhammad Amir has also been struggling with the ball in the last year. The only remarkable performance he showed was in Champions Trophy final against India where he took the crucial wickets of Kohli, Rohit, and Dhawan.
Apart from that, Amir has not been able to perform well. Although he is still one of the most economical bowlers, yet he isn’t getting wickets. The PCB selection committee has also dropped Amir out of the squad for the upcoming home series against.
Shoaib Malik & Babar Azam
Now, not all the category updates were bad. There were some deserving changes as well. The likes of Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik who are quite consistent in their performances have been placed in Platinum as well. They have been in good form in the last few months.
Earlier this year, Babar Azam became the second fastest batsman in history to score 2000 runs in ODI cricket which took him only 45 innings. Shoaib Malik, on the other hand, has taken responsibility as a senior in many matches. He has played a vital role in winning matches for his team with both bat and ball, and his performance in the Asia Cup 2018 really stood out among the whole team.
