IPL Match 4: Gayle Fires for Kings XI as Royals Collapse to Fall Short

An amazing comeback for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their first outing was attributed to some brilliant bowling and catching. Chris Gayle’s fifty set the tone for KXIP as the bowlers defended the target of 185 after a nervy last few overs.

Match Report

1st Innings – Universe Boss Gayle

Lokesh Rahul had a bad day as he took the long walk back to the pavilion for just 4 runs. However, Chris Gayle’s bat spewed runs all around the park. 8 fours and 4 sixes helped him accumulate a quick-fire 79 from 47 balls to set the stage for the slog overs.

His innings showed why he is still one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world cricket at an age of 39. Universe Boss is just about the right title for the big man. England will definitely remember him for a long time.

Youngster Sarfaraz Khan Learns a Thing or Two From Gayle

21-old year Sarfaraz Khan joined Gayle at the crease at the team score of 60-2. He along with Gayle combined 84 to help their team put a decent total on the board. While no other batsman, other than these two, could get going, Sarfaraz struck at 158.62 to score 46* and post a total of 184-4 in 20 overs.

2nd Innings – Rahane and Buttler Steady at Top

An opening pair with Jos Buttler as the aggressor and Ajinkya Rahane as the strike rotator meant that Rajasthan Royals didn’t falter to leave a little too much for the rest of the batting lineup. The two added 78 in just 8.1 overs. Ravi Ashwin got rid of Rahane for 27 while Buttler was run out at 69.

Steven Smith Enters the Arena

After missing out competitive cricket for a year, Steve Smtih returned to the fray. It wasn’t a day for him to win the match for his team as Sam Curran got the better of him for 20 runs off 16 balls. It did get an absolute beauty of a catch from KL Rahul to get rid of Smith.

Wickets Tumbling

Two balls later, the other set batsman, Sanju Samson followed suit. Two wickets in the 17th over followed by as many in the 18th over by Mujeeb ur Rehman made it hard for Royals to inch towards the victory.

By the end of 19 overs, RR were 7 down for 164, leaving 21 runs to get in the final over. From 148-2 to 169 all out, Rajasthan Royals weren’t able to handle the pressure well as they fell short by 14 runs.

Moment of the Match

Sam Curran got hammered earlier in the match, however, he delivered when it mattered the most. Steve Smith and Sanju Samson were well on their way to steer their team to victory when he removed both in the 17th over. It was a match-defining moment. More importantly, it was KL Rahul who took a stunner to send Smith back to the dugout.

Man of the Match

Chris Gayle was awarded the Man of the Match award.
