The Indian Premier League is one of the most popular tournaments of the cricket world watched live in the whole world. Millions of fans within India and outside follow it with all their heart and to interact with those millions of fans, all the teams are highly active on famous social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

All franchises have used social media as a successful marketing tool to promote their respective teams whether it’s hosting Twitter Battles and updating the official handle with match videos regularly or cricketers interacting with fans directly. Everything on social media related to IPL catches fire. Here are the most followed IPL teams on social media.

Owned by the Ambanis and led by Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians, without any doubt, are ranked at the top in the most followed IPL teams on social media. The franchise owns 5 million Twitter, 2.3 million Instagram, and 13 million Facebook, followers. Mumbai also gets a lot of support both at home and away venues in the mega-league.

The power packed team has won three IPL trophies while also qualifying for playoffs in the three seasons. However, last year, the side was eliminated in the league stages only.

  • Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR has a huge fan base, and it is no surprise at all. After all when you are side owned by India’s biggest superstar, Shahrukh Khan then this is bound to happen. They have won the IPL trophy in 2014 and for the last three consecutive seasons have made it into the playoffs.

They have an ever-growing fan base on social media. Kolkata have 4.1 million Twitter, 895 thousand Instagram, and 16 million Facebook followers.

The ywllow brigade led by Mahindra Singh Dhoni is the top followed teams of IPL. Chennai Super Kings enjoy spectacular support in all arenas whether it’s in the stadium or on social media. The franchise has lifted three titles of IPL and are amongst the most popular teams.

CSK has 4.5 million followers on Twitter, 1.9 on Instagram while 12 million people also follow its official page on Facebook.

 

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore

Led by the most popular Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, the side has been rather unlucky when it comes to winning in IPL but on social media they perform exceedingly well.

Having international stars like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in the side, Bangalore has a strong on-ground as well as social media fan base. The franchise owns 3.4 million followers on Twitter, 2.1 million Instagram and 9.3 million on Facebook.

Despite the consistent non-performance, the Facebook page of KXIP has 8.8 Million likes. The Twitter account of the franchise has also been followed by 1.90 Million fans. A total of more than 35 thousand tweets have kept their fans gushing over their appearances on and off the field. The Instagram account of Punjab franchise has attracted more than half a million followers.

This team is the heart of Punjab and attract a lot of followers online because of cultural affiliation.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad

The squad of Sunrisers Hyderabad has been away from the limelight, they can be called the underdogs of the tournament as well. However, they have performed considerably well since their entry into IPL. The team has a growing fan base on social media too and attracts a lot of love from audiences of the South. They are the dark horse with their Facebook page have 5.98 Million likes. They have more than 2M followers on Twitter and close to 800,000 on Instagram.

The presence of ace cricketers like Aaron Finch and Kane Williamson make it a really strong side and they are the hot contenders for this year’s trophy.

 

The team representing the capital of India, Delhi Capitals, is not particularly famous on social media in comparison to other teams. One reason behind it could be the absence of a big Indian star player or their lack of good performance in the tournament. This year, however, things might turn as leading batsman Shikhar Dhawan has joined them. Currently, they have 1.3 Million fans on Twitter and over 4.5 Million on Facebook.

Rajasthan Royals are making their comeback in IPL after two years. They were suspended along with CSK due to their involvement in spot-fixing and betting.

Royals won the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 under Shane Warne, defeating Chennai Super Kings. Apart from winning the inaugural edition of IPL, Royals also reached the final of Champions League T20 in 2013, losing out to Mumbai Indians in the end. They have around 4 million likes on their Facebook pages along with 1m on Twitter.
