In a must-win game between Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the KKR team bowed out the competition without putting up too much of a fight whereas MI finish top of the table. This loss means that Hyderabad Sunrisers have secured the 4th playoff position alongside Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC).

Match Report

The toss was won by Mumbai Indians, who elected to field first. KKR struggled to put up a strong performance and could only manage 133 runs on the board. Malinga was again the pick of the bowlers with his 3 wickets which stole the show.

Mumbai Indians reached the target in the 17th over with the loss of only 1 wicket.

1st Innings: Russell Fails to Power KKR

After the dismissal of Shubman Gill, Lynn and Uthappa stabled the ship with quick 41 and 40 runs respectively. Between both batsmen, they hit 7 sixes and 3 boundaries.

Following that, KKR suffered a huge blow of losing successive wickets without disturbing the scoreline too much. Malinga sent back Karthik, Russell and Rana back to the pavilion.

From 72-3 to 133-7, KKR surrendered to a premium bowling attack of Mumbai Indians.

Quality Bowling Attack

Four of the Mumbai Indians bowlers bowled their overs with a lower economy than 8.00 runs per over (RPO). It was a significant game for both teams and the MI bowlers stepped up at the right moment.

Wickets were shared between Malinga (3), Bumrah (2) and Pandya (2).

2nd Innings: Steady Start

The South African de Kock has often failed to provide Mumbai with a solid opening. However, today he stepped up and scored a quick 30 runs from 23 deliveries – smashing 3 sixes and 1 four.

Sharma & Yadav Secure the Victory

With de Kock departing for 30, the skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav chased down a relatively low target with comfort. Both put up a great partnership of 88 runs. Both remained unbeaten at 55 and 46 runs respectively.

This is one of the few victories in IPL which have seen the chasing side win by 9 wickets.

Moment of the Match

Andre Russell is known for his big hitting and he showed his quality in IPL 2019 as well. His wicket was absolutely vital for KKR and Malinga dismissing him on the very first ball was probably the turning point of the match.

Man of the Match

Hardik Pandya was named as man of the match.
