IPL 2019: Match 55 - CSK Fail to Finish Strongly Against KXIP

The first match of the last day of qualification phase in IPL 2019 was between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at Chandigarh. It was a great opportunity for CSK to finish top had they won the match but they failed to do so and allowed Mumbai Indians to secure the pole position instead.

Match Report

The toss was won by KXIP, who opted to field first. Batting first, CSK were given a welcome surprise of du Plessis’s return of form. He helped CSK reach a respectable total of 170 runs from their 20 overs.

KXIP, however, had plans to ruin the party for CSK and chased down the target on the last ball of 18th over, thanks to heroic efforts of KL Rahul.

1st Innings: Faf du Plessis – 96 Runs off 55 Balls

Despite an early dismissal of Shane Watson, KXIP could not contain the Proteas powerhouse Faf du Plessis. He dismantled the Punjab bowling attack and dished out 4 maximums and 10 boundaries to reach his 96 runs from just 55 deliveries.

Suresh Raina also contributed 53 runs and MS Dhoni returned to pavilion not-out with his 10 runs from 12 deliveries.

Shami & Curran’s Economical Display

KXIP conceded 170 runs from 20 overs but Mohammad Shami and Sam Curran remained economical and also shared the 5 wickets. English pacer Sam picked up the crucial wickets of Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson and Suresh Raina whereas Shami closed the innings with Rayudu and Yadav’s dismissals.

Both pacers restricted CSK from posting an even bigger total on the board, which proved pivotal at the end of the day.

2nd Innings: A Consolation Win

Although KXIP are out of the IPL 2019, they managed to secure a consolation win. They chased down the target of 170 runs on the last ball of the 18th over thanks to the super performance from KL Rahul.

The KL Rahul Show

Much has been said about the striking ability of likes of Andre Russell and Hardik Pandya but KL Rahul is another one who’s making a name for himself. His remarkable knock of 71 from just 36 balls ensured a comfortable chase for the team that did not have much to play for apart from their pride.
