IPL 2019: Match 54 - RCB Win Puts SRH's Playoffs Chances in Danger

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad has almost knocked out yet another team as the away side failed to register a much-needed win. It was Kohli’s men who had the last laugh as they chased down a total of 176 to finish things off with a win.

Match Report

Royal Challengers Bangalore elected to field first after winning the toss. It was the last league game for both teams and it remains to be seen whether we see SRH in the playoffs or not. Kohli XI came out on top at their home ground as SRH bowlers failed to defend a decent enough target despite getting early breakthroughs.

1st Innings: Saha Guptill Start with a Bang

The new opening pair, after the departure of Jonny Bairstow and David Warner, hasn’t been able to fill their shoes – there aren’t any (or many) hundred run stands between them, however, they have consistently scored quickly at the top.

This time around, they added 46 in 4.3 overs as Saha fell to Navdeep Saini after making 20 from 11.

Captain Williamson Steps Up

SRH captain, Kane Williamson looked in great touch as he smashed an unbeaten 70 from just 43 balls. His knock included 4 sixes and 5 fours to ensure that his team put up a fighting total on the board.

Washington Sundar Takes 3 as Williamson Continues Smashing

Willaimson was the only constant in SRH’s batting as none of the batsmen from the lower order got going. The dismal return from the batsmen meant that the away side were 15-20 runs short of what they would have wanted to post.

RCB have utilized Washington Sundar poorly this season. He has played only a couple of matches this season, however, he proved tonight that he can be a utility player. He claimed three wickets for 24 runs, curbing the flow of runs.

2nd Innings: RCB Reeling After 3 Quick Wickets

At 2.5 overs, the scoreboard read 20/3. Parthiv Patel, Virat Kohli and then AB de Villiers departed, denting the hosts’ chances of ending with a consolation win. You know you are in trouble if Kohli and de Villiers are back in the hut this early.

Hetmyer, Gurkeerat Add a Massive 144 Runs

With players like Hetmyer in the team, you never know what to expect. The left-hander stepped up his game and raised his bat for an impressive fifty. He smashed 6 sixes as he ended with 75 from 47 balls.

His partner, Gurkeerat Singh was nothing short of brilliant as he assisted the West Indian with a well-made 65 from 48.

A Twist in the Tale but RCB Over the Line

Quick wickets to remove both Hetmyer and then Gurkeerat sparked a mini-collapse, and despite wickets tumbling, Umesh Yadav’s two 4s in the last over helped RCB get over the line.

Moment of the Match

Shimron Hetmyer’s authoritative innings earned him praise from cricketing circles and his innings was a masterclass, helping his team overcome SRH’s challenge.

Man of the Match

Shimron Hetmyer won the man of the match award.
