IPL 2019: Match 52 - Win Keeps KKR Afloat as KXIP Knocked Out


With a lot at stake, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) proved to be an entertaining match as the away side clinched a clinical victory while chasing 184. KKR batters showed the firepower and the win now takes them to 12 points, on par with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Match Report

Kolkata Knight Riders elected to field first after winning the toss. Kings XI fielded Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Sam Curran and Andrew Tye while Knight Riders picked Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Andre Russel and Harry Gurney as their quartet of overseas players.

1st Innings: Sandeep Warrier on Fire

The late signing for Kolkata, Sandeep Warrier, who was drafted in as a replacement for injured Shivam Mavi, proved his selection right as he removed Chris Gayle and KL Rahul within a space of two overs. He finished with figures of 31/2 in his 4 overs.

Decent Middle Order Contributions

Following a dismal start, the likes of Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran and Mandeep Singh made good contributions to set the stage for late power hitting. Agarwal scored 36, Mandeep made 25 while Pooran was the most impressive with 48 from 27 balls. He smacked 4 sixes and 3 fours with a strike rate of 177.77.

Curran Blitzkrieg

Sam Curran has proved himself to be a very handy all-rounder. He’s not only good with the ball, but he can also connect some fiery strokes when he comes out to bat. His batting talent was on full display tonight as he smashed 55* at a strike rate of 229.16.  2 sixes and 7 fours meant that Kings ended with a solid total of 183/6.

2nd Innings: Lynn Starts Briskly

Australian swashbuckler, Chris Lynn came out with intent as he started smashing right away. His 22-ball 46, including 3 sixes and 5 fours got KKR off to a brilliant start. He added 62 for the 1st wicket as he was caught and bowled by fellow Australian, Andrew Tye.

Uthappa and Russel Score Quick-Fire Twenties

Robin Uthappa walked in to bat after the dismissal of Lynn. He scored a brisk 22 from 14. Following Uthappa’s wicket, Andre Russel continued the good work as he also made a handy 24 from 14.

Gill Constant as Karthik Finishes in Style

Shubman Gill scored yet another half-century as he ended with a well-made 65* from 49 balls. The captain’s cameo of 21* from 9, including a six and a four off the last two balls to seal the victory for KKR with 12 balls to spare.

Moment of the Match

Chris Lynn’s brilliant knock of 46 at the top provided the platform for Russel and Uthappa, and later Karthik to get the team over the line.

Shubman Gill won the man of the match award for his innings.
