IPL 2019: Match 51 - Mumbai Win a Thriller in Super Over

The 50th match of the IPL – Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) – offered great viewing as it proved to be an evenly matched contest between two top teams. It was the hosts, Mumbai which won the match in the end as their bowlers made sure SRH didn’t get over the line. The fate of the match was decided in a Super Over thanks to some brilliant batting by Manish Pandey to enforce a tie.

Match Report

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first in a bid to defend the total. Defending is Mumbai’s strong suit as they have some really good bowlers including Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga. The match was a thriller as no team was willing to give up, and rightly so, considering the importance of tonight’s two points.

1st Innings: A Slow Start

The home team openers were a little cautious at the start of the innings thanks to some very tight bowling from Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed. The duo of Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock added 36 in 52. overs before the captain departed for 24 from 18 balls.

de Kock and S Yadav Offer Solid Stand

After the captain’s dismissal, de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav made sure Mumbai Indians stayed on track. The two added 54 runs as Yadav as Khalil removed him at the team total of 90/2.

Marathon Innings from de Kock

Batsmen came out and went. The only constant was the South African swashbuckler – not so much in tonight’s match – as he raised his bat for his 4th fifty. He remained not out at 69 from 58 balls which helped Mumbai Indians post a total of 162/5. It was perhaps a few runs short of what they would have initially hoped.

2nd Innings: Openers Provide Brisk Start

SRH openers, Wridhiman Saha and Martin Guptill were quick to get going as they came out with intent. They added 40 for the 1st wicket in 4 overs.

Bumrah Removes Openers in Quick Succession

Just when the away team looked like taking the match away, Mumbai’s premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah sent back the openers within a space of two overs. He first removed Saha in the 4th over and then Guptill in the 6th.

Manish Pandey’s Effort Takes it to Super Over

The right-handed top-order batsman, Manish Pandey has looked in brilliant touch in the last few matches. He was at it again as players on the other end kept giving away their wickets. He scored yet another fifty.

Needing 17 from the last over, Pandey struck two sixes, one of those on the last ball when they needed 6 for a tie, to take the game to a Super Over.

Super Over

Sunrisers batted first in the Super Over.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Batting:

  • Batsmen: Manish Pandya, Mohammad Nabi and Martin Guptill.
  • Bowler: Jasprit Bumrah

1+Wkt, 1, 6, Wkt

Manish Pandey and Mohammad Nabi both got out as SRH managed only 8 in the Super Over.

Mumbai Indians Batting:

  • Batsmen: Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard
  • Bowler: Rashid Khan

6, 1, 2

And match over. It was all too simple for Mumbai to chase 9 in the Super Over considering their firepower in the form of Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard.

And, with this win, the home team has progressed to the playoffs. Sunrisers still have a chance to make it to the top 4.

Moment of the Match

Manish Pandey’s last-ball six to level the scores was the moment of the match.

Man of the Match

Jasprit Bumrah was the man of the match for keeping his nerve in the Super Over as well as in the chase.
