IPL 2019: Match 50 - Spinners Choke Delhi as Chennai Move to the Top

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) proved to be a one-sided affair as the home side hammered DC for an easy win to get to the top of the table. MS Dhoni’s side now has 18 points from 13 games, 2 clear of Delhi which has 16 points.

Match Report

Delhi Capitals got it all wrong as they opted to field first after winning the toss. Chepauk pitch has a knack of pulling off low-scoring thrillers, however, Chennai batters made sure they posted a competitive total on the board. Delhi were spun in a web as CSK spinners ripped apart the away side’s batting unit.

1st Innings: Not a Good Day for Watson

Shane Watson has failed to deliver for CSK except for one match where he singlehandedly won the match for the side. He failed to get off the mark tonight as well despite facing 9 balls. His misery was ended by Jagadeesha Suchith as he fell in the 4th over at team score of only 4.

Raina and du Plessis Put a Strong Stand

Despite an early blow, Chennai Super Kings senior pros, Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina, stabilized the innings, adding 83 runs for the second wicket.

du Plessis departed for 39 from 41 while Raina made 37-ball 59.

Dhoni, Jadeja End With Some Lusty Blows

The top order ensured that the likes of MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav and Ravindra Jadeja enjoyed free hand at the end. Dhoni blasted 44* from 22 balls including 3 sixes while Jadeja played a cameo of 25 runs from just 10 balls.

2nd Innings: Chahar Strikes Early

Deepak Chahar has been a great find for CSK as he has been brilliant this season. He removed Prithvi Shaw to set the tone for spinners to spin their web.

The Captain Fights

Shreyas Iyer hasn’t been at his best this season, however, he played some brilliant strokes tonight. He made 44 from 31 however, no other batsman supported him to get anywhere near the target.

Spinners Outclass Batsmen

MS Dhoni has found a perfect spin bowling trio in the form of Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir. The spinners took 8 wickets between them while giving away only 49 runs in 10.2 overs.

Imran Tahir was unplayable as he took 4 wickets for 12 runs while Jadeja picked up 3 wickets for 9 runs in 3 overs. The result was that DC were bundled out for 99 runs in 16.2 overs.

Imran Tahir now has 21 wickets as he is closely following his South African teammate, Kagiso Rabada who has 25 wickets from 12 innings. Both the players were playing in tonight’s match.

Moment of the Match

Imran Tahir’s 4 wickets made sure that Delhi Capitals never got a real chance of winning the match.

Man of the Match

MS Dhoni won the man of the match for his blitzkrieg.
