IPL 2019: Match 48 - Sunrisers Deliver a Crucial Team Performance to Beat KXIP

The 48th match of the IPL was Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kings XI Punjab at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad. Both teams had a tough run in the season with different yet very similar problems; failure to remain consistent.

Match Report

The toss was won by Kings XI Punjab who opted to field first in front of the away crowd. The home team, Sunrisers, started off in explosive fashion with David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha opening the innings.

Sunrisers posted 212-6 on the board, which followed a nerve-wracking chase from the Kings XI.

Despite KL Rahul’s heroics, Kings XI Punjab suffered a 45-runs defeat. However, their playoff chances are still alive as they still have two games in hand.

1st Innings: The David Warner Show

David Warner put up a great show as he managed 81 from 56 balls, smashing 2 sixes and 7 boundaries. Saha and Manish Pandey were the other two top scorers for Sunrisers with 28 and 36 respectively.

Mohammad Nabi came in at no. 4 and smashed two quick sixes before he was removed from the crease by Mohammad Shami. Kane Williamson faced yet another failure as he could only add 14 runs from 7 deliveries.

Sunrisers’ failed to capitalize on the start that was provided by Warner as their middle-order collapsed. Despite that, they managed a respectable total which ensured a tough chase for the away team.

A Difficult Day for Bowlers

Safe to say when you concede 212 runs in 20 overs, your bowling has let you down. It was a similar case for Kings XI as Mujeeb-ur-Rehman’s wicketless display from his 4 overs saw him get dispatched for 66 runs.

Arshdeep Singh and Murugan Ashwin both picked up 1 wicket each but conceded 42 and 32 runs respectively from their 4 overs.

The Kings XI bowlers bowled 14 wides throughout the innings, which is not acceptable in any format of the game.

2nd Innings:

Chasing a big total away from home: it was all set up for Chris Gayle on the night. But the big West Indian failed to deliver after Khaleel Ahmed sent him back to pavilion.

Gayle’s opening partner, KL Rahul, took his time and built his innings cautiously. He took 56 deliveries for his 79 runs which featured 5 sixes and 4 fours. However, he failed to see his team over the line after he departed in the 2nd last over. Khaleel Ahmed, again, was the man behind the ball.

Rashid Khan sent David Miller and Ravi Ashwin to pavilion on successive deliveries to further the pressure on Punjab’s side, which eventually proved to be too much.

Three Wickets Each For Khaleel & Rashid

It is not every day you see bowlers steering the teams towards victory in T20 games against quality opposition batsmen. However, today belonged to Khaleel Ahmed and Rashid Khan who picked up 3 wickets each.

  • Khaleel Ahmed: 4-40-3
  • Rashid Khan: 4-21-3

Both bowlers inserted pressure and took wickets when it was required the most. Khaleel’s victims included Gayle, KL Rahul, and Nicholas Pooran whereas Rashid dismissed Mayank Agarwal, David Miller and Ravi Ashwin.

Moment of the Match

Two wickets in two balls by Rashid Khan changed the course of the game. Although KL Rahul was still at the crease till the 2nd last over but the pressure Rashid had built up also saw Rahul lose his wicket towards the end.

Man of the Match

David Warner is the man of the match.
