IPL 2019: Match 47 – Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians

The 47th match was played between Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The game held extreme significance for both teams but KKR had the last laugh.

Match Report

The Mumbai Indians won the toss and asked Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first. Kolkata posted a grand total of 232 runs from their 20 overs in the 1st innings, which proved a little too much for the Mumbai Indians despite heroic efforts from Hardik Pandya.

Mumbai managed a total of 198 runs, missing out on a crucial victory by 34 runs.

It is worth mentioning that this is the first Kolkata win against Mumbai in their previous 9 meetings.

1st Innings: KKR Post a High Score on Board

The decision to field first proved costly for Mumbai as Shubman Gill and Chris Lynn started strong. Both openers scored a half-century, 76 off 45 deliveries for Gill while Lynn took only 29 balls to get to his 54.

A total of 36 boundaries were hit by KKR in the 1st innings including15 sixes and 21 fours. Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah, two premium bowlers, could not contain the KKR and Russell pressure and conceded 92 runs from their collective 8 overs alone.

Yet Another Andre Rusell Classic

After a strong opening stand of 96 runs, Russell walked in and lived up to his reputation and smashed another memorable inning. He scored a total of 80 runs from 40 deliveries, which included 8 sixes and 6 fours at a strike-rate of 214.28.

Russell has already played a number of remarkable knocks in the IPL. This 80-run innings included boundaries against a top bowling attack.

2nd Innings: Lackluster & Hurried Performance From Mumbai

Despite gathering momentum early on in the season, Mumbai Indians are facing difficulties. Quinton de Kock managed yet another duck today while Rohit Sharma, uncharacteristically, failed to absorb the pressure.

After destroying the opposition with the bat, Andre Russell was also the most economical KKR bowler. He picked up 2 wickets of Evin Lewis and S. Yadav.

Hadrik Pandya’s Solo Efforts

A solo effort from Hardik Pandya was the only consolation for Mumbai today. His 17-ball half-century was the fastest in the history of the IPL. It was a heroic inning from Pandya; he scored a total of 91 runs from 34 balls – 9 sixes and 6 fours.

In addition to his glorious solo innings, Pandya also reached the 2,000 T20 runs milestone.

Moment of the Match

It was a remarkable effort from Russell and Pandya and surely enough, the moment of the day also involved both the players. Batting at 91, Hardik looked extremely dangerous but it was Russell’s day and he made sure of that by taking the catch of Hardik.

Man of the Match

Andre Russell was the man of the match for his remarkable all-around performance.
