IPL 2019: Match 46 - Delhi Qualify for the Playoffs After Win Over RCB

The 46th match of the IPL was Delhi Capitals vs Royal Challengers Banglore at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi. It was a crucial game for both teams but for very different reasons. Delhi were chasing the top spot whereas RCB aimed to strengthen their position and eventually qualify for the playoffs.

Match Report

In a crucial match, Delhi’s captain Iyer opted to bat first. It was a bold decision and Delhi went on to put 187 runs on the board. The decision was proven right as Royal Challengers Bangalore bundled over for 171 and lost by 16 runs.

1st Innings: Dhawan & Iyer Both Score Half-Centuries

The Delhi innings started wonderfully well as Shaw and Dhawan dispatched Mumbai’s bowlers all over the park. However, the aggression was a bit too much as Shaw fell to Yadav in the 4th over.

Shreyas Iyer came in next and joined Dhawan, who then put up a good partnership, which saw both players reach their half-centuries.

The West Indian Powerhouse!

Sherfane Rutherford’s contribution of 28 at a strike-rate of 215.38 included 3 maximums and 1 boundary. His 13-ball cameo helped Delhi post a respectable target on the board, which proved difficult for RCB to chase.

Axar Patel also held his nerve at the other end supporting Rutherford with 16 runs of his own from 9 deliveries. Their partnership proved pivotal at the death of Delhi’s innings.

2nd Innings: A Compact Bowling Display

The second innings began perfectly for RCB as Parthiv Patel and Kohli made a calculated start. Patel, after scoring 7 boundaries and 1 maximum, was dismissed to a wonderfully taken catch by Axar.

Patel from DC then joined the action to dismiss Virat Kohli, who picked out the lone man in deep. Rutherford, after contributing with the bat, made a remarkable breakthrough with the ball as he sent AB de Villiers back to the pavilion.

Gurkeerat Singh and Marcus Stoinis tried their very best to salvage something from the game but were unable to do so.

Axar – Fielder of the Night!

Fielding is often neglected but tonight was an example of pure athleticism and agility from Axar Patel. He stopped various runs in the field and made two catches – out of which, one of them will be talked about for a long while. His catch of AB de Villiers was crucial and exactly what Delhi required to push for the win.

Moment of the Match

Axar made a difference in the field but what stood out was his catch of AB de Villiers at the midwicket boundary.

Dismissal of AB de Villiers at that point in time put extreme pressure on the remaining RCB batsmen, which contributed to their loss.

With this win, Delhi Capitals have now also qualified for the playoffs.

Man of the Match

Shikhar Dhawan got the man of the match award.

Up Next

The next match is a night game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, which will start at 7:00 (India time) and 7:30 (Pakistan time).
