IPL 2019: Match 44 - Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians (Post-Match)

The 44th match of the IPL was Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians at Chepauk in which the hosts suffered their first defeat on the home ground as Mumbai close down the lead at the top.

Match Report

Chennai Super Kings failed to keep their unbeaten home-record alive as Mumbai Indian delivered a sumptuous bowling performance. Suresh Raina stood as captain for the home side in the absence of Dhoni. The home team won the toss and elected to field first. Despite restricting Mumbai to a low target, Chennai batsmen could not stand the heat of Malinga and Krunal Pandya.

1st Innings: Captain’s Knock From Rohit Sharma

After Quinton de Kock’s early departure in the 3rd over, Rohit Sharma took the responsibility of posting a reasonable target on the board for Mumbai Indians. Sharma hit 6 fours and 3 maximums for his 67 off just 48 deliveries.

Along Rohit, Evin Lewis also stepped up with 32 runs of his own from 30 balls, which helped Mumbai post a target of 156.

Super Spells From Mitchell Santner & Harbhajan Singh

Chennai are lucky to have Mitchell Santner and Harbhajan Singh in their team as they single-handedly restricted Mumbai to a smaller target.

Santner only conceded 13 runs and dismissed Rohit Sharma and Evin Lewis from his four overs whereas Harbhajan remained wicketless but only leaked 23 runs from his full spell.

2nd Innings: The Mumbai Bowling Unit Steps Up

Chennai faced extreme difficulty while chasing a low target of 156 against Mumbai’s premium bowling attack. Despite Murali Vijay’s fighting efforts, Chennai were cleaned up for just 109 runs at home.

A Collective Effort

Lasith Malinga picked up 4 wickets, Krunal Pandya picked up 2 wickets and conceded only 7 runs from his 3 overs whereas Jasprit Bumrah also sent two players back to the pavilion. The Mumbai bowling attack seemed like a complete unit and made it incredibly difficult for Chennai to get going.

Moment of the Match

Quick departure of Chennai stand-in captain Raina and Rayudu put extreme pressure on the home team, which led to a complete breakdown.

Man of the Match

Rohit Sharma won the man of the match award for his brilliant innings.
