IPL 2019: Match 40 – Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals (Post-Match)

In the 40th match of IPL 2019 – Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals, a monumental inning of 78 not out from Pant led Delhi to the top of the IPL points table with a massive victory.

Match Report

This was the first time that these two sides were facing each other in this year’s Indian Premier League. Both Rajasthan and Delhi were coming into this match after winning their previous matches. For Rajasthan, it was a matter of winning all of their matches from here onwards if they were to progress. Looking to hamper their chances of progressing, Delhi won the toss and elected to field first.

1st Innings: Rahane, take a bow!

Rajasthan were dealt a huge blow after their opening batsman, Samson, was run-out by Rabada on a duck.

You can take the captaincy from him but you can not take him out of the game. If Rahane was to be blamed partly for the run-out, then he made up for it with a monumental knock. He, alongside the skipper Smith played a delightful inning, bringing up the 50-run stand just outside the power play. Rahane was a man on a mission today as he brought up his successive half-century.

The pair converted their 50-run partnership into a hundred run stand.

Smith was equally as good as the ex-skipper, bringing up successive half-centuries of his own as well.

The 130-run stand was finally broken after Smith (50) skewed one straight to long-off where Morris took a well-judged catch. Wickets now continued to fall from this end but it was Rahane who held one end and went on to make a well deserved century. He brought up his ton from just 58 balls with the help of 11 fours and 3 sixes.

Rabada chipped in late with two wickets off the last over but Rahane was able to carry the bat as Rajasthan finished with a great total of 191/6 in their 20.

2nd Innings: Dhawan up to the challenge

A mammoth target required a mammoth response and Delhi provided exactly that in the form of Shikar Dhawan. Dhawan has answered his critics very well with a couple of brilliant innings in the past few matches. He struck a massive 9 boundaries as Delhi finished with 59 runs on the board in the power-play, bringing up another half-century in just 25 balls.

PANT-ASTIC!

Delhi lost two wickets in quick succession after Dhawan fell for 54 followed up Iyer’s dismissal for just 4 runs. With the RR at 10.3 now, Shaw found himself with Pant at the crease. Pant went after the bowlers right from the get-go with some superb hitting all around. He followed the footsteps of Dhawan after scoring a blistering half-century from just 26 balls.

Pant lost his partner for 42 but not before the pair had put the team in pole position with a brilliant 50-run partnership. Rutherford’s (11) cameo of a four and six was short-lived after giving away his wicket to Kulkarni. Pant, however, remained at the crease and made sure that Delhi were always in the game. With 6 runs needed off the last over, Pant fittingly hit a six to wrap up proceedings. He remained unbeaten on 78 as he led Delhi to a brilliant 6 wicket victory.
