In the 39th match of this year’s IPL – Royal Challengers vs Chennai Super kings, Dhoni nearly pulled off a miracle at the death but fell short as RCB took the match by 1 run.

Match Report

These two sides met in the opening match of this year’s Indian Premier League. The match saw CSK absolutely demolishing the RCB side, bowling them out for only 70 runs. It has been a downhill battle ever since for the Challengers as they plummeted down at the bottom. CSK, on the other hand, have exhibited exactly why they are the defending champions after topping the table. Looking to maintain their dominance, CSK won the toss and chose to field first.

1st Innings: Patel goes big

After being sent in to bat first, RCB would have hoped for their skipper to go all guns blazing after a wondrous century in the last match. However, Kohli’s stay at the crease was a brief one after he was stumped off of Chahar’s bowling for 9. Patel looked very good from the other end with him getting into a couple of partnerships with the middle order batsmen.

AB, who was coming back from an injury, made a quick-fire 25 off 19 while Patel carried the onslaught from the other end as well. The pair made 47 from 26 balls before AB was dismissed by Jadeja. CSK started picking up wickets from this end as Jadeja picked up his 2nd after he got Nath for 24 while Stoinis was dismissed for 14, courtesy some brilliant bit of teamwork between Faf and Shorey.

Patel, meanwhile, brought up his half-century from 37 balls.

CSK continued to pick up wickets as RCB finished with 161/7 on the board in their 20 overs. Jadeja, Chahar, and Bravo all picked up two while Tahir got one for the night.

2nd Innings: Take out the Steyn Gun

What a start Steyn has on his comeback to the IPL. Watson (5) had another disappointing night after edging Steyn straight to Stoinis at first slip. Steyn bowled a peach of a delivery to get rid of Raina on his very first ball. Raina (0) was shell-shocked after Steyn delivered an inch-perfect Yorker to take out his stumps out of the ground.

CSK found themselves in deep trouble after they lost another two back to back wickets, this time to Yadav. Faf struggled for runs at the crease and he was taken out by his countrymen, AB, who nearly had an awful collision while taking the catch. AB got an easy one next up at long-off with Jadhav departing for 9.

With CSK in all sorts of disarray, being down 4 wickets for 28,  Dhoni and Rayudu took the crease. The pair brought much-needed poise to the faltering innings with a 50-run stand.

Chahal broke the partnership after uprooting Rayudu’s stumps for 29. His wicket was followed by Jadeja’s (11) who was unfortunate to get run-out. Captain Cool, however, kept his cool as he brought up his half-century.

DHONI almost pulls it off!

With 26 needed off the last over, it seemed like a real mammoth task. Yadav was bowling the last over and he nearly choked it as Dhoni hit 3 sixes and a 4, only to miss the last ball and get run-out. Dhoni, unbeaten on 84 today – 12 boundaries, is widely regarded as the best finisher in limited over’s cricket and he almost pulled off a miracle here today but was really unfortunate as RCB took the match by 1 run, thanks to the direct throw of Parthiv Patel.
