IPL 2019: Match 37 – Delhi Capitals vs Kings XI Punjab (Post-Match)

In the 37th match of this year’s IPL – Delhi Capitals vs Kings XI Punjab,  Delhi clinched a nail-biter after a solid partnership of 92 runs between Dhawan and Iyer proved enough to lead them to a 5 wicket victory.

Match Report

Both Delhi and Punjab were evenly poised on the points table with 10 points each. Delhi sat on the 3rd spot due to their better NRR. The kings were coming into this match on the back of a couple of tremendous batting performances while Delhi came into this match after being manhandled in the previous match by CSK. Looking to keep their 3rd spot intact, Delhi won the toss and elected to field first.

1st Innings: Sixes Gayle-ore!

It was all Chris Gayle in Punjab’s inning today. Lamichhane ran riot against the Kings’ batsmen but he was on the receiving end when he faced Gayle. Gayle was all guns blazing today, smashing the bowlers for fun across the park. The likes of Rahul, Agarwal, Miller and Curran all fell cheaply while Gayle brought up his half-century on 25 balls from the other end.

Gayle hit 6 fours and 5 sixes for a 37 ball 69 before being dismissed by Lamichhane, courtesy some brilliance in the field by Ingram and Axar. He got Curran for naught in the very same over as he finished with 3 for 40 in his 4.

Mandeep Singh added 30 runs to the total while Harpreet Bar remained unbeaten on a 12 ball 20 as Kings finished with 163/7 in their 20.

2nd Innings: Dhawan demolishes the Kings

Chasing 163, Delhi lost Shaw early for 13 after being run-out at the non-striker’s end.

However, any hopes of applying further pressure from the Kings was instantly squandered by the duo of Dhawan and Iyer. Dhawan has looked the old Dhawan off late, batting superbly well in the past couple of matches. Here today, he looked flawless, putting up a 92 run stand with Iyer, who too looked very good in the run chase.

Dhawan, meanwhile, brought up his half-century in 35 balls.

Iyer leads Delhi over the line

The partnership was broken by Viljoen after he got Dhawan for 56. Viljoen followed it up with another wicket after getting Pant (6) in his very next over. Delhi lost another two wickets in the same over after Shami got Ingram who looked very good for his 19 from 9. Patel followed on the very next ball after another collision and another run-out. However, Iyer kept his nerve as he remained unbeaten on 58 after hitting the winning runs in the last over, leading Delhi to a 5 wicket victory.
