IPL 2019: Match 36 – Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians (Post-Match)

In the 36th match of this year’s IPL – Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians, a brisk start by Samson followed by a captain’s knock from Smith and a delightful inning from Parag ensured an easy victory for the Royals.

Match Report

The battle of the second and second last placed team saw MI taking on RR. Mumbai were coming into this match on a 2-match winning streak but their last loss came against the very same opposition that they faced today. Rajasthan, who have had a disappointing campaign up until now, were sublime in their victory against Mumbai last time out, winning the match by 4 wickets. Looking to make it two out of two, RR won the toss and decided to field first.

1st Innings: Quinney on the scoreboard again

Mumbai were dealt an early blow after the skipper went early for 5 for a caught and bowled by Gopal. Gopal nearly got another one after de Kock, on 1, sliced one over to long-on only for Archer to drop it. He made the most of this chance as he hit four consecutive boundaries in the very next over. Quinney oozed class after that early hiccup as he brought up his 3rd IPL half-century this season.

It just took him 34 balls as he made the Royals pay for the costly drop. He got good support from the other end in the form of Yadav and the pair were involved in a massive 97-run stand.

Quinney was dismissed on 65 by Gopal who got his 2nd of the match. Rajasthan tightened the screws in the latter part of the innings with a few wickets but another drop catch, this time of Hardik Pandya, allowed him to score a quick-fire 23 off 15 as Mumbai finished with 161/5 on the board in their 20. Gopal stood out with figures of 2 for 21 in his 4.

2nd Innings: Samson lights up the stadium

Chasing a decent target of 162, Rajasthan lost Rahane early for 12 but the man of the moment was Samson who just punished anything put in his way. Partnering him was Steve Smith who would have been pretty much relieved after making it to the WC squad for Australia and the confidence in his batting was the proof of it. Samson smashed 6 boundaries as RR finished with 60/1 on the board at the end of the power-play.

Chahar strikes, twice

The match once again turned tables after the re-introduction of Chahar into the attack. He got the big wicket of Samson (35) after he sliced a flighted delivery straight to long-on. Chahar was in business once again as he took the wicket of Stokes (o) as well.

Smith and Parag to the rescue

With the match evenly poised, someone had to play an anchoring inning. That inning was provided by Smith, who resumed captaining duties once again.

He was partnered by Parag, who also played a massive inning as the pair brought up their 50-run partnership.

Steve Smith got to his 7th IPL half-century in the meanwhile.

The match took another bit of interesting turn after another two quick wickets. Parag (43) was unfortunate to get run-out courtesy a Rocket throw by Cutting.

Meanwhile, Turner got out for his 4th consecutive duck as Rajasthan put up a few nervous faces. However, with 4 runs needed off the last over, Binny hit Malinga for a boundary on the very first ball as Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 59, leading Rajasthan to a 5 wicket victory.
