IPL 2019: Match 29 - Kolkata Knight Riders vs Chennai Super Kings (Post-Match)

In the 29th match of this year’s IPL 2019 – Kolkata Knight Riders vs Chennai Super Kings, a superb spell of bowling by Tahir and some fine batting by Raina and Jadeja drove CSK over the line.

Match Report

The top two teams were set to battle it out in the 29th match of this year’s IPL. Chennai had a very dramatic win in the last match which saw MS being fined 50 percent of his match fee. Meanwhile, KKR battled a lost cause despite a good outing with the bat.

Looking to strengthen their position further at the top, MSD decided to bowl first.

1st Innings: Tahir spoils the fun for Lynn

Chris Lynn decided to go after the bowlers right from the get-go. He smashed Chahar for two consecutive boundaries in the very first over, followed three more in his second.

His partner at the other end, Narine had another poor outing as he went for just 2 from 7. Lynn, however, continued to smash the bowlers, bringing up his half-century in the process.

Imran Tahir turned the screws in Chennai’s favor after he got two big wickets in his 2nd over. First up was Rana (21), who was caught at long-on by Faf. Faf was in action once again as he took an absolute ripper of a diving catch, running in 20-25 yards from long-on, to dismiss Uthappa for a golden duck.

Lynn continued his sublime hitting form, hitting Jadeja for three consecutive sixes, as he got into a nice little partnership of 42 runs with the skipper. Dinesh reached a milestone in the meanwhile:

The partnership was broken by Tahir who got the dangerous Lynn, 82 from 51 balls, as his 3rd scalp of the day. The late middle order and the tail did little to contribute to the total with Tahir getting Russell (10) for his 4th wicket in the same over again, finishing his spell with figures of 4 for 27.

Thakur got two wickets on the last two balls of the innings wrapping up KKR’s innings.

KKR managed to finish with 161/8 on the board, courtesy a brilliant 82 from Lynn.

2nd Innings: Wickets at regular intervals for KKR

Faf looked like a man on a mission, hitting five delightful boundaries including four on the trot to Andre Russell. On the other hand, Watson’s miserable IPL campaign continued after he was trapped in front by Gurney for 6. Faf’s blistering cameo of 24 lasted for just 16 balls after his off-stump was uprooted by Narine.

Wickets continued to tumble for the Kings with Chawla picking up 2 in the middle overs. Rayudu went for 5 while Jadhav, who looked explosive with his four boundaries, was trapped in front for 20.

Jadeja’s cameo seals the win

Raina and Dhoni tried to bring poise to the innings, scoring a hard-fought 40 run partnership. Dhoni, who had a very intriguing battle with Narine, got struck plumb in front with Narine having the last laugh. Raina, meanwhile, continued to anchor the innings, bringing up his maiden fifty of this year’s IPL.

Raina was joined by Jadeja and the pair showed great nerves despite the run-rate creeping up a bit. Jadeja smashed Gurney for three successive boundaries in the 19th over to turn the match heavily in CSK’s favor. He hit another boundary in the last over as Chennai chased down the target with 5 wickets and 2 balls to spare.
