IPL 2019: Match 28 – Kings XI Punjab vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (Post-Match)

In the 28th match of this year’s IPL – KXIP vs RCB, a magnificent partnership of 85 runs between Kohli and AB led Bangalore to their first win in VIVO IPL 2019.

Match Report

RCB have had one of the worst starts to an IPL campaign for any side. They have lost all of their matches so far and are currently cemented at the bottom of the table. KXIP, meanwhile, is on par with three teams for points but is currently placed at 5th owing to their slow NRR.

As far as the toss is concerned, RCB won it and elected to bowl first.

1st Innings: A Gayle masterclass against his former side

Chris Gayle has had some very memorable innings in IPL and today’s innings stacks right up there with his best. He looked threatening and lethal right from the get go as he absolutely battered his former side. He was involved in a number of partnerships today including a 50 plus stand with Rahul.

Gayle smashed bowlers for fun, sending the ball out of the park on numerous occasions. He scored a massive 24 runs in the 6th over as Punjab finished with 60 in the power-play.

Rahul (18) departed after getting stumped to Chahal. Meanwhile, the Universe Boss brought up his half-century in just 28 balls.

RCB bounced back with wickets in the middle. Both Khan and Agarwal fell for 15 while Curran could only manage a single run. Gayle was involved in another 50 plus stand, this time with Mandeep Singh as he smashed a couple more boundaries. He was unlucky not to score a century, narrowly missing by 1 run as he remained unbeaten on 99. This helped KXIP to finish with 173/4 in their 20 overs. Chahal was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 33.

2nd Innings: AB and Kohli put up a good fight

RCB had to respond well to this while chasing and they did just that. Patel made a quick-fire 19 before faltering. Meanwhile, Kohli struck a few delightful boundaries of his own as RCB managed 66 runs in the first 6.

Kohli and AB have had a very stop-start IPL campaign and they both were due a big inning. However, they got it right this time as the pair were involved in a brilliant partnership. A half-century for Kohli was also brought up in the meanwhile.

RCB finally breaks the duck

The 85 run partnership was broken when Kohli pulled Shami straight to Ashwin as he departed for a well-played 67. After Virat’s departure, AB stepped up and he made sure there were no lapses this time around as he too got to his half-century.

His partner, Stoinis, also chipped in with a brilliant cameo of 28 from 16 balls as he steered RCB over the line with 8 wickets remaining. Both him and AB remained unbeaten on 28* and 59* respectively, leading RCB to their first win in this year’s IPL.
