IPL 2019: Match 25 – Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings (Post-Match)

Rajasthan Royals faced the mighty Chennai Super Kings in the 25th match of this year’s IPL which saw a last ball six by Santner to earn Chennai a hard-fought victory.

Match Report

Chennai have been in rampant form and them being on top of the table justifies that. They won their last match comprehensively by 7 wickets. Rajasthan, on the other end, were absolutely battered by KKR as they plummeted down to the 2nd last spot. Looking to keep their top spot secured, Chennai won the toss and chose to bowl first.

1st Innings: Another mediocre outing with the bat

Rajasthan have been poor in this campaign and their batting is a major factor. Rajasthan started off very briskly with 4 boundaries in the 10 balls but Chahar made the breakthrough soon after, trapping Rahane in front for 14. Joss Buttler looked in real fine nick as he whacked 5 boundaries in no time. However, he got a bit carried away and skied one to extra cover, falling for 23 off 10.

It was a very sluggish batting performance from the middle order thereafter. No one could get any partnership going with wickets tumbling from both ends. Stokes only hit one boundary as he made a 26 ball 28 runs while Jadeja reached his milestone.

18 runs came off the last over as Gopal chipped in with a late cameo of 19 from 7.

This allowed RR to finish with 151/7 on the board in their 20 overs. Chahar, Thakur and Jadeja, all picked up two wickets each while Santner managed 1 scalp.

2nd Innings: Chennai lose early wickets

In reply, Rajasthan got off to the perfect start with the ball. Kulkarni almost got Watson on the very first ball as the ball flew past his outside edge. However, he cleaned him up for naught on the fourth delivery after Watson played all ends up to an away swinger.

Chennai were in shambles very early on after losing three more wickets, just inside the 25 run mark. Faf went for 7 to Unadkat while Raina was involved in a shambolic run-out as Archer hit the stumps. He was back in action when he got Jadhav’s (1) wicket after Stokes took a brilliant catch at backward point.

Dhoni and Rayudu show resilience

It was up to Dhoni and Rayudu now to steady the ship and both the batsmen played a very cool and calm inning as they brought up their 50 run stand. The pair also brought up Chennai’s 100 run mark while Rayudu reached his half-century.

The partnership was broken on 95 after Rayudu was dismissed for 57, courtesy another stunning catch in the field by Gopal. Despite the wicket, Dhoni continued to play his game as he brought up another IPL half-century.

Shades of WC final

With 18 runs needed off the last over, Stokes was handed the ball. It looked like a real uphill task but he was smacked for six on the very first ball by Jadeja. He bowled a no-ball on the very next ball but he got Dhoni (52) on the third ball. There were scenes when umpires called another no-ball but revoked their decisions with Dhoni coming back on the field and being involved in a heated argument. However, Santner did not let it get to his head as he smashed Stokes for six on the very last ball, leading Chennai to 4 wicket victory.
