IPL 2019: Match 24 – Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians (Post-Match)

Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab provided a thrilling finish to a nail-biter which saw Mumbai Indians take the match on the very last ball, courtesy a glorious inning off 83 from just 31 balls by Keiron Pollard.

Match Report

We had a very intriguing encounter today as MI went up against KXIP. MI were coming on the verge of a very emphatic victory where they defended a low target of 137 by bowling out SRH for just 96 runs. Just like them, KXIP had also won their last match, defeating SRH by 6 wickets. With the 2 points at stake today, MI won the toss and elected to bowl first.

1st Innings: Destruction at the Wankhede

Kings had a blistering start to their innings, courtesy a fiery Gaylestorm. The first two overs went for just 4 runs but once Gayle and Rahul got going, there was no stopping the two. Gayle, particularly, led the charge with 22 runs in the 5th over, including 3 humungous sixes.

Rahul joined in the fun by hitting a couple of sublime shots of his own, bringing up the 50 run stand.

Both the Pandyas were on the hit list of the openers. First, it was Hardik who went for plenty after Gayle hit him for 3 boundaries. He hit Krunal for a monstrous six to bring up his half-century in the next over. The pair also brought up their century stand as a consequence.

Rahul carried over his fine form from the previous match, bringing up successive half-centuries.

The partnership was finally broken by Behrendorff when he got Gayle’s wicket but not before he had dented the Indians with a 36 ball 63 run innings, including 7 massive sixes. KXIP lost a couple more wickets during proceedings but Rahul stayed at the crease as he hit Hardik for 22 in 4 balls.

This allowed Rahul to reach his maiden IPL century.

Rahul carried the bat as he remained unbeaten on 100 from 64 balls including 12 boundaries. With his efforts, KXIP finished with 197/4 on the board.

2nd Innings: Pressure gets the better of Mumbai

In response to a mammoth total, MI had to bat with aggression and Lad gave them just that by hitting a couple of boundaries in the very first over. De Kock also showed the same intent from the other end but the pressure got big on Lad as he was cleaned up by Shami for 15. De Kock also fell soon after for 24 with Miller taking a fantastic sliding catch.

KXIP had a firm grip on the match as they continued to take wickets. The likes of Yadav and Pandya provided little resilience as they scored 21 and 19 each. Shami got two in the same over as he finished his quota with figures of 3 for 21.

However, Pollard had other ideas. With the match almost out of Mumbai’s grasp, Pollard came in to bat at number 4 and boy did he make a mark. Striking the ball at a rate of 267, Pollard brought up his 50 in no time.

Pollard brought his team back in the game as he hit a massive 10 sixes and 3 fours for a score of 83 from just 31 balls. He got out in the very last over but by then, the damage had already been done with Mumbai snatching the victory on the very last ball with 3 wickets to spare.
