IPL 2019: Match 23 - Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders (Post-Match)

The 23rd match of this year’s IPL saw the Chennai Super Kings take on the Knight Riders. A fantastic spell by Chahar and a very composed innings by Faf allowed Chennai to take the match and the top spot as well.

Match Report

It was the battle between the top two teams as Kolkata faced Chennai. Both the teams had only lost one match up until now with Kolkata topping the table owing to their massive NRR. Kolkata stormed their way to the target in their previous match against Rajasthan with almost 7 overs left to play. Chennai, on the other hand, defended their target of 160 against KXIP with fair ease due to their superb bowling attack. With the 2 points and top spot in sight, Chennai won the toss and elected to field first.

1st Innings: Utter dominance by the Lions

Dhoni’s side has been one of the best bowling sides in this year’s IPL. The likes of Chahar, Harbajhan and Imran have been rampant at times and today was nothing different. Chennai completely backed Dhoni’s decision of bowling first as they completely ran riot against KKR. Three wickets fell in the first three overs, including both the openers.

Lynn (0) played across the line to a ball that kept low and got trapped infant by Chahar. Harbajhan got the hero of the previous game as Narine (6) top-edged one straight to Chahar. Chahar got his 2nd of the night when Rana (0) tried to pull one that kept low, only to toe-end it to mid-wicket, who took a neat catch diving forward.

Chahar got his 3rd of the night when he got Uthappa’s (11) wicket. No one really got going as wickets continued to tumble for the Knight Riders. Andre Russell came in and saved the day for KKR somewhat as he played a blinder of an innings, 50 not out off 44 balls that included 8 boundaries.

Harbajhan took two wickets in the 15th over while Imran Tahir also managed two scalps allowing KKR to reach a below-par score of just 108/9 in their 20 overs.

Meanwhile, Deepak Chahar starred with 3 wickets.

2nd Innings: Chennai grabbed the top spot

Chennai started off very quickly with Watto hitting a classy four on the very first ball off the innings followed by a six. He hit another four but got a bit carried away and hit a short ball on middle, straight to square-leg. This was Narine’s 1st of the night. He got his second in Raina (14) who had a real torrid time at the crease and skied one to Chawla who took an absolute banger of a catch.

Faf and Rayudu made sure KKR had no way of coming back into the match as they put up a fantastic partnership of 46 runs.

Rayudu fell for 21 to Chawla but that did not matter much as Chennai eased their way to the target with Faf remaining not out on 44 runs. Chennai took the match with 7 wickets and 16 balls to spare and with this, the top spot as well.
