IPL 2019 Match 2: Andre Russel Wins a Thriller for KKR

IPL’s second match proved to be a thriller of a contest as Kolkata Knight Riders overpowered Sunrisers Hyderabad thanks to some dazzling power hitting by West Indian all-rounder Andre Russel. The big man showed how brutal he can be when he is on song. No matter if it was Bhuvaneshwar Kumar or Shakib Al Hasan, Russel was unstoppable.

Match Report

It was a see-saw of a contest as it wasn’t sure who would win it until the last six by Shubman Gill, making sure Russel’s power show didn’t get wasted.

1st Innings – David Warner Returns in Style

Aggressive Australian left-hander, David Warner is back to business after the Newlands ball-tampering ban, announcing himself in style. The 32-year old scored boundaries at will, combining a massive 118 for the first wicket in just 12.5 overs.

20 Runs Short?

After a solid start, SRH wasn’t able to utilize the last few overs as the team managed to score 181/3. With only 3 wickets down, you got to wonder the score should have been 15-20 runs more than they managed to accumulate.

2nd Innings – Aggressor Lynn Falls Early

KKR had been banking on the explosive nature of Chris Lynn, however, he walked back to the pavilion at team total of 7. Bangladeshi all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan removed the opener.

Uthappa and Rana Steady The Ship

Vice Captain Robin Uthappa and opener Nitish Rana added 80 runs for the second wicket before Sidharth Kaul got rid of Uthappa for 35.

Nitish Rana kept going on the other end, scoring 68 off 47 before falling to leg-spinner Rashid Khan.

The Russel Show

Just when you thought the match was slipping out of the hands of KKR, the West Indian all-rounder blasts 49 off just 19 balls, winning the match for his team from a very tough position. He struck 4 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 257.89 to get his team over the line in the final over.

Moment of the Match

Sidharth Kaul’s 18th over was when the match changed as Russel got 19 to set the tempo for the remaining overs.

Man of the Match
