IPL 2019: Match 19 - Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (Post-Match)

In the 19th match of this year’s PSL – Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, a blistering knock by Pollard and a magnificent spell by Joseph earned Mumbai the 3 points as they beat the Sunrisers.

Match Report

After Chennai topped the group earlier, Sunrisers had the chance once again to overtake their place at the top as they prepared to face the third last team, Mumbai Indians.

1st Innings: Clinical bowling performance display

This has been somewhat of a norm in this year’s IPL – the big guns misfiring. This trend continued today with another dismal batting performance by the Mumbai Indians after they were put in to bat first. But as much as bad the Indians were, the Sunrisers were equally as good with the ball. With not much offering from the bowlers, the batsmen played reckless shots as they threw away their wickets.

The likes of Sharmas and Pandyas were once again disappointing to say the least as Sunrisers kept the scoring rate very tight. No one could get a partnership going with wickets falling at regular intervals. The Indians were 7 down just inside the 100 run mark with only 2 overs left to play.

Pollard Express yet again

The only two plus points from today’s Mumbai’s innings were Pollard being dropped and then punishing the opposition for it. Pollard, who had troubling negotiating Rashid Khan, was dropped by him off of Kumar’s bowl and that chance came back to haunt him somewhat as Pollard hit 6 boundaries in the last two overs with 39 coming off them. He remained unbeaten on 46 from just 26 balls as MI finished with 136/7 on the board.

2nd Innings: No fireworks for the Dynamic Duo

The duo of Bairstow and Warner have been terrorizing the opposition teams for the past 4 matches with consecutive 50+ run stands in as many matches. However, all good things come to an end and it was the end of their stellar run of partnerships. Bairstow, who looked in the mood again, fell cheaply today for just 16 runs. His partner in crime, David Warner, fell one short of his total as he was cleaned up by Joseph.

Joseph announces himself to the World

After that, the Sunrisers’ middle order just crumbled despite having a small target to chase. Joseph was the stand out amongst the Mumbai bowlers as he ran through more than half of the Sunrisers defense, picking up a six for while conceding ONLY 12 RUNS in 3.4 overs. He picked up two important top order batsmen and cleaned up the tail as the Sunrisers were dismissed for just 96, losing the match by 40 runs.

Moment of the Match

The moment of the match has to be the six-wicket haul by Joseph, that too on debut, as he single-handedly won Mumbai the match. He also broke the long-standing best figures record of Sohail Tanvir.

Man of the Match

Alzarri Joseph got the man of the match award for his brilliant bowling spell.
