In the battle between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab, it was the former who emerged victorious after a thrilling competition.

Match Report

Chennai Super Kings won the toss and chose to bat first at their home ground.. The yellow brigade seemed pretty confident and one did expect fireworks from the talented players. Kings XI Punjab’s squad was a strong one too as it marked the return of batting powerhouse Chris Gayle.

1st Innings: A Confident start for Chennai Super Kings

With Watson and Du Plessis opening the innings, Chennai had an ideal start as they made 50 runs in the first six overs. It gave a hint that the team was in the mood to score big, however, things faltered a bit when Watson suddenly lost his wicket after the 6th over. Captain Ashwin caught him on 26 and it was a big relief for the Kings.

Despite Watson’s loss, the runs kept coming in as Du Plessis was in the mood to fire and scored 54 on 38 balls. Raina made a quick cameo of 17 runs and Dhoni added in 37 runs towards the end. Despite a destructive start, Chennai could not manage to put up a huge total and closed on 160/3.

2nd Innings: Kings XI Put up a tough fight

Kings XI Punjab got a sudden shock in the beginning when they lost their key player early on. Chris Gayle who had returned from an injury could not manage to make it big and just made 5 runs. After that Mayank Agarwal lost his wicket in the same over and Kings were under pressure in a wink of an eye. It was KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan who anchored the team from there on, the slow and steady approach made things work for the team. KL made 55 runs but then lost his wicket at a very crucial point which pulled away the team from victory. Nothing worked for the team after that and Kings found it difficult to recover.

Harbhajan’s double-wicket maiden over

Harbhajan Singh became the real hero of the match as his quick two wickets in the initial overs made all the difference for Chennai. He caught both Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal which added immense pressure on Kings XI Punjab. Although Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan did provide resistance, the initial blow was very strong.

Moment of the match

The moment of the match was Harbhajan Singh’s stellar second over where he got two wickets for zero runs. The destructive bowling landed Kings XI Punjab in a lot of trouble.

Man of the match

Faf Du Plessis was given Man of the Match award for his match-winning innings of 54 runs from 38 balls.
