Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world. It began in England in the late 16th century. Since then it has evolved in every era. The rules and regulations have been constantly changing for the betterment of the sport. Like many other factors, fielding is also one of the factors that can turn the tide in any match if done properly.

Now, most of you already know that how important fielding is in a cricket match. But, what are the different cricket fielding positions and what combinations are used by teams? Let’s have a look.

Pic Credit: Wikimedia

There are around 65-70 different cricket fielding positions in the field as shown in the above pic. A total of 11 players are to be positioned on the ground, usually by the captain of the team with the input from other senior and experienced players in the team. The field is set, keeping in mind the playing style of the batsman on strike. For a defensive batsman, an attacking field is set while for attacking batsman, a defensive field is implemented. The wicketkeeper and bowler have a fixed position. The keeper is always behind the batsman while bowler bowls from the opposite side.

Let’s have a look at the different cricket fielding positions and combinations used by the teams in different formats of cricket.

Test Cricket

The fielding positions are set according to the situation of the match. However, in Test matches, we usually see attacking field set by the teams. There is no Power-play rule in Test matches as the rule is for limited overs format only.

In a Test match there are usually 3-4 Slips with a Gully to defend the area behind the batsman. Also, there is a fielder on the Long-On or Long-Off position to stop the boundaries. A Third-Man position is given to a fielder to recover the ball if the Slips miss it. The Point fielder guards the off-side shots while Square Leg is responsible for the on-side shots.

ODIs

The field is quite different in ODI because of the limited overs and the Power-play rule. The field in ODI is defensive as compared to the Test matches.

Power-Play Rules:

According to the new rules introduced by ICC, following are the new Power-Play rules for ODIs:

  • There are 3 Power-Plays in each ODI.
  • First Power-Play is from 1-10 overs allowing 3 players outside the circle
  • Second Power-Play is from 11- 40 overs allowing 4 players outside the circle
  • Third and last Power-Play is from 41-50 overs allowing 5 players outside the circle

There are usually 1 or 2 slips set in the starting 6 – 10 overs. 4 fielders defend at the bounders in the middle overs. The Long-On and Long-Off positions are almost always occupied. Deep Square Leg and Deep Cover positions are also covered to prevent runs. Cover and Mid-Wicket positioned players are responsible for the open area between Long-On and Square Leg as well as Long-Off and Deep Cover.

T20 Matches

T20 is officially the shortest format in cricket comprising of only 20 overs per innings. The batsmen play aggressively and try to score as many boundaries as they can. To stop the boundaries, a defensive field is set. According to the ICC rules for a T20 match:

  • First 4 overs are counted as Power-Play and only 2 fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
  • For the remaining 14 overs, a total of 5 players are allowed to field outside the 30-yard circle.

Usually, one Slip is set in the first 6 overs. Because of field restrictions, the Mid-On and Mid-Off take the charge of defending the straight hits. The gap between Fly Slip and Point is covered by the Gully. However, after the Power-play, 5 players are set on boundary positions including the Long-On, Long-Off, Deep Mid-Wicket, Deep Cover and a Deep Fine Leg or a Deep Third Man.

Cricket is considered as the second most popular sport in the world after football. It is played in almost all regions of the world, but the Indian sub-continent, Africa, Australia, and the British Isles are the regions where it is more famous. Among all the regions, the sub-continent has the most cricket following nations. It was Pakistan and India dominating cricket a decade ago in the region. But now, the time has changed. Other teams have also emerged to be strong enough to compete with any other world-class cricket team. One of them is the Afghanistan Cricket Team.

EVOLUTION OF AFGHANISTAN CRICKET TEAM

Afghanistan has been playing cricket for almost last 2 decades. But they didn’t achieve much until 2013 when they qualified for the ICC T20 World cup for the first time. This was a great achievement for the Afghan side although they couldn’t perform well in that World cup and was knocked out in the initial stages.

ODI PERFORMANCE

Afghan cricket team earned their ODI status back in 2011. Their first ever opponent was Scotland where Afghanistan won the match by an 89 run margin. They played their first-class match against Zimbabwe. It was a four-day match which resulted in a draw.

It was then in 2013 World cup qualifier matches where Afghanistan beat Kenya to qualify for the World cup 2015. They were only able to beat Scotland in the group stages of the World Cup and failed to advance to the next stage.

ASIA CUP 2018

Afghanistan put on quite an impressive show at the recently held Asia cup in UAE. They were the most entertaining side as each of their match was a stunner. They started with a big up set by beating one of the tournament favorites – Sri Lanka, that too by a huge margin of 91 runs.

Then it was Bangladesh’s turn who was defeated by the Afghan team by 136 runs. However, in their second encounter, Bangladesh won by a narrow margin of just 3 runs.

The highlights of the Asia cup for the Afghan team were their fixtures against Pakistan and India. Their match against Pakistan went to the last over and it seemed that they will create history by beating Pakistan. But thanks to the experienced Shoaib Malik who kept his calm and saved his team.

In another nail nail-biter against India, Afghanistan did the unexpected. First they bowled the whole Indian team out, restricting them to a total of 252. Then they did a great run chase but unfortunately fell short of just 1 run to their victory. They leveled the score with India and the match ended as a draw.

TEST STATUS

The International Cricket Council awarded Afghanistan and Ireland the Test status in 2017. With the addition of both teams, now the number of ICC Full Members is 12.

Afghanistan played their first Test match against India in June 2018. It proved to be one of the shortest Test matches in cricket history when India beat them quite easily by a heavy margin of an innings and 262 runs. Afghanistan is now scheduled to play 19 Test matches for the session 2019-2023.

T20 WORLD CUP

Afghanistan Cricket Team participated in the T20 World Cup 2016 along with other 15 teams. This time, the Afghan side performed much better and gave a very improved performance. They not only beat Zimbabwe but also were able to grab the match against the eventual tournament winners – West Indies. But still, that wasn’t enough for them to lift the trophy or to reach the finals of the tournament.

WORLD CUP 2019

Afghanistan has been improving their cricket quite impressively. The Afghanistan Cricket Board is aiming for the top 4 spots in the upcoming cricket World cup in 2019. Their recent performance in the Asia cup has already alerted the other cricketing nations.

Afghanistan cricket team may be the underdogs of the upcoming World Cup and have the potential to surprise their tough opponents. They have the ability to produce some big upsets in the biggest cricket tournament with their aggressive style of play.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Following are some of the Afghan national players against which the opposing teams should consider to do homework:

  • Rashid Khan

Rashid is currently no 1 ranked ODI bowler in ICC rankings. Within just 3 years Rashid Khan has become a superstar. The 20-year-old has the deceives the batsmen with his magical leg spin bowling. He will be the key player for Afghanistan in World cup 2019. He was also added to the PSL 2019 platinum category players list.

  • Muhammad Nabi

Nabi, who was the also former captain of the Afghan national side, performs well with both bat and the ball. The all-rounder plays for many international leagues including IPL, PSL, Big Bash and CPL.

  • Muhammad Shehzad

The wicketkeeper-batsman can do some serious damage in opening overs with his hard hitting. He’s also known as the Afghan Dhoni for having a good command on Dhoni’s signature helicopter shot. He does some brutal hitting with the bat and is also an experienced wicketkeeper.

  • Hazratullah Zazai

He is the one who recently got fame hitting six 6’s in an over in the Afghan cricket league. With his aggressive batting, Hazratullah can prove to be a match winner for Afghan side.

Keeping in view the improvement Afghanistan cricket has made in such a short time, we can assume that soon they will be among the big names of International Cricket. According to the latest ICC Rankings, they have already surpassed the likes of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in T20 and are ahead of Zimbabwe and Scotland in ODIs.

Cricket has seen many stars that came out surprising everyone and then ruled the cricketing world for years. Looks like Prithvi Shaw is going to be one of those names. Who is Prithvi Shaw, what is his background and how did he get this fame? Let’s find out.

Family Background

Prithvi Shaw was born on November 9th, 1999 in Virar, India. His mother died when he was only 4 years of age. His father – Pankaj Shaw had a garments business which he gave up just to focus on Shaw’s cricketing career. And it turns out that he made the right call.

Career

Prithvi Started playing cricket at a very young age. He was only 3 when his father enrolled him in a cricket academy in the town. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. Since then, he has continued to make the headlines for all the right reasons.

Let’s take a detailed look at his career phases:

Early period

At the age of just 11 years, Shaw got his first contract from AAP Entertainment Limited and shifted to Mumbai along with his father to continue his cricketing career. There he was admitted in the Rizvi Springfield High School and soon became the captain of school’s cricket team. Under Prithvi’s captaincy, Rizvi Springfield had won 2 Harris Shield titles.

In November 2013, Shaw broke the record of highest runs scored by a player ever in any organized cricket match. He scored 546 runs from just 330 balls in that match against St Francis d’Assisi. That’s when he grabbed the attention of the media and won praise from many big names. But that was just the start.

First Class Cricket

Shaw debuted in first-class cricket in 2017 where he scored a century in a semi-final of Ranji Trophy. He played for Mumbai and was named the man of the match. He also holds the joint record of scoring centuries on debut in both Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy along with Sachin Tendulkar.

Under-19

The Indian selection board was so impressed with Shaw’s performance in domestic cricket that he was named the captain of India’s under-19 team for the World Cup in 2018. It was then Shaw’s brilliant captaincy that led Indian Team to win the under-19 World Cup beating Australia in the final. He is still the captain of U-19.

IPL 2018

The IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils bought Prithvi Shaw for INR 1.2 crores in the 2018 auction. He played his first match against Kings XI Punjab where he became the youngest player in Indian Premier League history to open for any team at the age of 18.

He wasn’t able to perform what fans were expecting from him in the IPL. However, in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Shaw scored a half-century which led his team to win the match by 55 runs. With that fifty, he became the youngest player in the IPL to score a half-century.

International Cricket

The BCCI selection committee called up Shaw for the Test series against England in August 2018. However, in the presence of other senior players, he didn’t get the chance to make his debut in that series. It was in October 2018 when he made his Test debut in the India vs West Indies series.

Prithvi impressed everyone in his very first innings against Windies, becoming the youngest Indian to score a century on his Test Debut. He scored 237 runs in 3 innings with an average of 118.5 runs. He was also named Player of the Series.

The New Media Star

After the blistering knock against the West Indies, Shaw has again attracted the media attention. He has been featured in many national and international newspapers and magazines. He has been praised by many Star players including Sachin Tendulkar himself. People have been comparing Prithvi Shaw to Tendulkar. The veteran batsman himself in his tweet seems quite impressed by this young blood’s performance.

This is what the former Indian star batsman Virender Sehwag has to say about the youngster.

Concluding Remarks

Summing it all up, there is no doubt that Prithvi Shaw is the future of Indian cricket. Players like him are the real assets of a country’s cricket. This is just the beginning for the 19-year-old. If he continues to perform the way he is performing, he surely will get his name enlisted among the best players in  Indian cricket as well as the cricket history.

What are your thoughts on him? Do you think he can be the next Tendulkar, Sehwag or Brian Lara? Let us know in the comments.

Earlier today, Pakistan Super League tweeted from their official Twitter account about the date and location of their players’ draft. PSL 2019 draft is going to take place in Islamabad this time, on Tuesday, November 20. Previously the draft took place in Lahore, but according to  PSL administration, they changed the location to make more cities part of this players’ draft. Islamabad is only the second city after Lahore to host the PSL draft.

All the teams will have to finalize the players they are going to retain by 13th of November and inform the PSL administration. According to the rules of the league, each team can retain up to 10 players. Teams can also trade players with each other, and the trade closes on November 12. Players which are not retained or traded will be released back into the draft pool, and then teams can buy them on the PSL 2019 draft day i.e. November 20.

This season, some new names have also joined the PSL including stars like AB De Villiers and Steve Smith who are both placed in the platinum category. Other names Pollard, Narine and Darren Sammy will also be joining them in the same category. The complete list of all foreign platinum players was announced earlier this month.

Along with the platinum players, local players that are placed in the platinum, as well as other categories were also announced by PSL. Some of these names include the likes of Shahid Afridi, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Muhammad Aamir, Shoaib Malik, and Hafeez.

Last year, the final took place in Karachi, and this year a total of 8 games are scheduled to be played in Pakistan, all set to be played in Karachi and Lahore. Pak Vs Aus 1st Test

Pakistan and Australia are currently in UAE for the Test and T20 series. Both the teams are scheduled to play 2 Test and 3 T20 matches against each other. The first Test match started on 7th October in Dubai International Stadium, and after a thrilling match, came to an end today. Pak Vs Aus first test complete stats are available on Cricket Howzat.

Pakistan 1st Innings

The Pakistani captain Sarfaraz Ahmed won the toss and elected to bat first as the pitch was quite suitable for batting. The openers gave a solid start to the team making 100+ partnership. Muhammad Hafeez, who was out of the field for the illegal bowling action, made an excellent comeback after the ban has been lifted. He scored a tremendous knock of 126 while Imam ul Haq added 76 runs to the team score. Then came the middle order where Harris Sohail and Asad Shafiq shined with the bat. Babar Azam didn’t perform well and only scored a total of 32 runs in the match.

Australia 1st Innings

In response to Pakistan’s 482 runs in first innings, the Australian opening pair Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch seemed quite on track to reduce the opposition’s lead. Australia were on 142-0 when the Pakistani debutant Bilal Asif started to show some magic with the ball. The 32-year-old provided the breakthrough by taking Usman Khawaja’s wicket. As soon as the top order fell, the whole Australian batting line-up was shattered. Asif got 6 wickets in first innings whereas the Muhammad Abbas was the one to grab the other 4 wickets. Australia were all out for 202 and trailed by 315 in their first innings.

Pakistan 2nd Innings

Pakistan didn’t enforce the follow-on and decided to bat again. This time the top order failed to deliver and Pakistan were 45-3 at the end of day 3. The next day Pakistan continued their innings and declared on 181-6, having a lead of 461 runs in hand. Imam Ul Haq was the top scorer with 48 runs. Sarfaraz XI could have got the safe figure of ‘500’ runs but they wanted to have enough time to bowl all the opposition out.

Australia 2nd Innings

The Australian team again had quite a good start from the openers who contributed 87 runs. Aaron Finch was just 1 run short of his half century when he was deceived by an in swinger from Muhammad Abbas. It was again Abbas in the 30th over where he sent two of the Aussie batsmen back to pavilion in the same over. Pakistan were in a strong position to win the match but it was then Travis Head and Usman Khawaja who took the responsibility and made a partnership of 132 runs. This partnership faded Pakistan’s chances to win the match. However, Yasir Shah came into action and not only broke the partnership but also took 3 other wickets. Pakistan was just inches away from the win when the Australian captain Tim Paine started to show resilience. He was on 61 not out when the match ended. On the other hand, it was Usman Khawaja whose much needed century in the crucial moment saved Australia from losing the match.

Match Result

Australia were 362-8 when the last day of first Test called off. The Young Australian side seemed quite happy with the dramatic draw while disappointment could be seen on the Pakistani faces.

Pak Vs Aus Test series started on 7th October and Pakistan bat first after winning the toss in the 1st test. After having a great start, Pakistan finished its first innings with a hefty total of 482 runs, including centuries by both Muhammad Hafeez and Haris Sohail. Inam-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq also scored 76 and 80 runs respectively contributing to the big total of the team.

Then came the turn for Australia to start their first innings and to give some trouble to the Pakistani side with their star players. But unfortunately, the Aussies even after a decent start didn’t seem much confident with their batting. They were restricted to only 202 by the opposition. The openers, Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch were the top scorers for the Australian side, with Khawaja scoring 85 runs, and Finch contributing 62 runs to the team’s total. Apart from these two, none of the other players stayed on the pitch for that long. Head, LabuschagneStarc, and Holland returned to the pavilion without scoring a single run to their name.

The credit goes to the brilliant bowling by Muhammad Abbas and the debutant Bilal Asif. Both of them together were able to take down the whole Australian batting line-up. Bilal Asif, who took 6 wickets, has also become the oldest Pakistani to take a five-for on his test debut. Muhammad Asif took the other 4 Aussie batsmen down.

Pakistani team has already started their second innings in Pak Vs Aus Test, with a lead of 280 runs. Its the 3rd day of the test already and the Pakistani side seems to be the stronger one so far. But it is yet to be seen if they will remain consistent for the rest of the match, or can Australia still make a come back.

IPL is the domestic cricket league of India and is considered as the biggest and most fascinating cricket league in the World. The cash-rich league began in 2008 and since then, it is organized every year. With some of the best cricketing skills and close matches, we also see some unforgettable moments being created by fans and the cricketers in every edition. Here are IPL 2018 top emotional heart-touching moments:

1. Fan touching MS Dhoni’s feet

MS Dhoni is undoubtedly the best captain of this era. With his calm and clever tactics, he has won his team many titles. He is the only captain to win all three major ICC tournaments including T-20 World Cup, ODI World Cup, and the Champions Trophy. In one of the IPL 2018 matches, when Dhoni came in to bat, a fan intruded the field and approached him. He bowed down to Dhoni and touched his feet as a gesture of immense respect. This incident is proof of how much MS Dhoni is loved by his fans.

2. Pandya and Rahul swapping shirts

In a do-or-die match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians, the Kings opener K.L. Rahul played a hard-fought inning of 94 runs but that wasn’t enough for his team and they were knocked out of the league. After the match, Rahul was spotted exchanging jerseys with Hardik Pandya. This was the first time that the jersey-swapping gesture was seen in a cricket match.

3. Kohli sitting on the floor eating Biryani

The sensational Indian superstar, Virat Kohli is known for his aggressive behavior in the field. But he possesses a very down to earth personality off the field. He was spotted eating biryani while sitting on the floor when he visited Muhammad Siraj’s home. This gesture was greatly appreciated all over the media.

4. Dhoni playing with his daughter

The IPL 2018 edition was won by Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni. The attraction of the final ceremony was MS Dhoni playing with his daughter. While the rest of the team was busy in the winning team photo shoot with the trophy, Dhoni was seen enjoying the win with his daughter.

5. Imran Tahir giving bowling tips to Young Nepali Bowler

Senior cricketers have been giving tips to opponent team players at many occasions. The same happened this year at IPL where the South African spinner Imran Tahir was seen helping the young Sandeep Lamichhane from Nepal. Both the players spent quite a lot of time on the pitch practicing different bowling techniques.

6. De Villiers and Kohli apologizing to the fans after league exit

AB De Villiers and Virat Kohli both played for Royal Challengers Bangalore this year. The 2018 edition of IPL didn’t go well for the Royal Challengers as they finished 6th in the league. The fans seemed quite disappointed with their team’s performance. It was De Villiers and Kohli who stepped forward and took the responsibility of poor show in the league. Both the players apologized to the fans and pledged to come up with something better next year.
