ENG vs WI 5th ODI: Gayle's 19-ball fifty powers Windies to level series 2-2


ENG vs WI ODI series so far was known for high scoring games until ENG vs WI 5th ODI. West Indies won the toss and elected to field first on a green pitch. England didn’t have a good start to the game, and their in-form batsmen failed to contribute enough to the scoreboard. England were 111 for 5, but then Oshane Thomas came to destroy the remaining batting lineup. In the space of just four overs, England had a stunning collapse, and from 111 for 5, they were all out on 113 runs in under 29 overs. This was England’s lowest Total in ODIs. Alex Hales and Buttler were the high scorers with 23 runs each.

Oshan Thomas finished the innings with figures of 5 wickets for just 21 runs. Jason Holder and Carlos Braithwaite also picked up two wickets each.

In response, Chris Gayle was in a hurry and continued his form. He smashed half-century off just 19 balls – the fastest ever by West Indian cricketer. He scored 77 runs off just 27 balls. His innings included five fours and nine majestic sixes. He was finally clean bowled by Mark Wood in the 9th over, but West Indies were already on 95 runs, needing just 19 more runs to win.

Chris Gayle also sets the World Record of hitting the most number of sixes in bilateral ODI series.

Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer then finished the game quickly and in the end, West Indies won the game in 12.1 overs with seven wickets remaining. West Indies wrapped up a crushing win over England in ENG vs WI 5th ODI to tie ODI series 2-2.

This was England’s biggest defeat in ODIs in terms of balls remaining

Both teams will now play a 3 match T20I series, and the first match of T20I series will be played on March 6 at Gros Islet.
