In a surprising move, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has removed Asghar Afghan from the leadership role, appointing new captains for all three formats. According to the latest development, the Selection Committee has named all-rounder Gulbadin Naib as the captain of ODI team and he will be assisted by leg-spinner Rashid Khan as the vice-captain.

For Test cricket, top order batsmen Rahmat Shah and Hashmat Shahidi will do the honors of captaincy and vice-captaincy respectively.

Rashid Khan will take the reins of T20I team while Shafiqullah Shafaq will be his deputy.

Official Announcement

ACB took to Twitter to share the news.

The timings of the announcement of new captains, especially for the One Day team raises some eyebrows as Afghanistan had been performing quite well under Asghar Afghan in recent times.

For an inexperienced team like Afghanistan, last-minute changes ahead of the World Cup do not bode well as these changes can hamper the team’s performance. Gulbadin has no experience when it comes to captaincy, however, the ACB has trusted his abilities to lead the team in the biggest cricketing event in the world.

Naib has played 52 ODIs till now and boasts an average of 22.41 in the batting and has taken 40 wickets at an average of 34.00. The responsibility on his shoulders would be huge as he will have to lead from the front.

Twitter Reactions

The decision has garnered a mixed response from the fans as some are calling it the right decision, while others are against new appointments.

Have ACB made a mistake?

The timing is questionable.

Time will tell.
