AFG vs IRE 4th ODI: Aftab Alam’s brilliant spell helps defeat Ireland

Afg vs Ire 4th ODI: Afghanistan takes lead in the series

The 4th AFG vs IRE ODI was played today at Dehra Dun, India, and again Afghanistan won the match against the Irish. Let’s take a look at the post-match.

Match Report

Ireland took on Afghanistan in the 4th ODI with the winner would be, all but, guaranteed the series. Despite Najibullah’s century, Afghanistan fell short to the heroics of Balbirnie as he steered his team to victory in the last ODI. Looking to bounce back, Afghanistan came in to bat first.

1st innings: Another top order collapse

The innings started in similar fashion for the men in blue who yet again got off to a calamitous start with the bat. Zazai went for 14 after he was bowled by McBrine. Noor Ali faltered in the very next over for 9, Dockrell taking a very good low catch to his right in the cover region.

Rahmat Shah soon perished for 15 as he inside edged one and the keeper took a brilliant catch. The collapse continued as Mcbrine took his 2nd of the night. Tossing one outside off, he lured Ikram Ali (1) into a drive only for him to edge it to the slip. Gulbadin Naib got unlucky when he was given LBW for 1 but the ball was pitched outside leg, Cameron Dow getting the wicket. He glt his second when he caught and bowled the centurion from last match, Najibullah, for only 10.

Late Resurgence

With 82 for 6, Afghanistan was in all sorts of trouble. However, Asghar Afghan, Muhammad Nabi, and Rashid Khan all engaged in very important partnerships as they steered Afghanistan to a respectable total, considering their early collapse.

Asghar made a well-deserved half-century before he was run out by Dockrell. Muhammad Nabi and Rashid Khan continued the charge before Nabi miscued one and got out to Dow at long off for 64.

Rashid Khan also brought up his half-ton before he got out to Simi Singh for 52, caught at deep backward square leg as Afghanistan got all out with 223 on the board. Cameron Dow was the best bowler with 3 for 32 in his 10.

2nd Innings: Ireland Falter

In response, Ireland never really got going as Afghani bowlers ran riot. Porterfield (21) looked good but he fell when he was trapped in front by Aftab Alam. Balbirnie, the man of the moment in the previous match, could not repeat his magic as he went for naught, caught and bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rehman.

Mujeeb ur Rehman got Stirling in the very same over, who tried to sweep but missed and got stumped for 11. After this, Ireland collapsed as Simi Singh (20) got bowled by Rashid Khan, through the shot too early.

Dockrell (8) failed to pick Naib’s slow ball as he went through the shot early and got bowled as well. Poynter chopped off Alam’s ball as he faltered for 4. Alam got two wickets in his next over as Ireland’s batting totally collapsed as they managed only 114 all out. Aftab Alam was the pick of the lot with figures of 4 for 25 in 8 overs.

Afghanistan won this match comfortably by 99 runs as they went 2-1 up in the series. Ireland will be extremely worried at how their batting collapsed and they have all to play for in the last ODI.

Afghanistan now has the lead in the series and the 5th and final ODI of the series will be played on 10th March 2019.
